chapter nine
feb. 26, 2013

i hear anastasia's breath hitch before agent coulson and her walk out of the room.

she didn't give me time to speak about peggy earlier so now she's going to think I withheld the truth from her.

as much as i wanted to give sam a glare, i knew it wasn't his fault. he did create a mess, but his intentions were nothing but good. i want to run after them and talk to her but the next hours are critical to what they choose for her as, not only an agent, but as an enhanced being.

we all watch as agent coulson and his group, including anastasia, turn the corner and wait for coulson to notify us that he's out of the building.

moments later an agent in the corner whispers into fury's ear and he nods before telling us it's okay to speak.

"she can't be killed," tony smirks, i roll my eyes at his excitement.

"we don't know that," i comment.

"steve, she just said-"

"natasha, i'm with steve on this one," rhodey adds, and i thank him with a look.

natasha and tony look at sam and then at fury. sam looks down and fury looks at sam before he turns the room dark and puts the image of adaline burned.

"she should have died from this, name someone who has survived after looking like this. i mean, please, steve, look at the woman who just walked out of the room,"he points at the door," there isn't a scratch on her body."

"we don't know for sure just how fast she's able to heal or if she could even wake up if she were to die. i mean really? that's what's going to happen for us to know for sure. we'd have to kill her in order to find out if she's truly able to cheat death," i become frustrated for even entertaining the conversation, and i look at fury with an obvious plead in my eyes, hoping he recognizes it and doesn't attempt anything stupid.

"natasha and sam, you two train her. sam, you'll focus on her physical qualities. natasha, get her to be more strategic and analytic with dangerous situations," fury looks directly into my eyes as he gives them the go ahead, sam and natasha agree with him as he continues,"she's gonna be the one who does mission impossible."

the room goes silent and tony seems delighted.

"you can't do that fury, he's her friend," natasha warns him.

"oh, please, he won't even remember her. he's still all mortal kombat killer, he's not a friend to anyone," tony adds bitterly and my blood begins to boil.

"tony, please-"

"alright, sorry, steve. i'm sorry, i know they're your friends," tony cuts rhodey off and i look at fury.

"she'll never agree to this."

"it's either that or she becomes a lab rat," tony adds and i cross my arms and look at sam and natasha.

"it's not personal, it's an assignment," natasha says, in hopes to comfort me.

"you don't have friends in this business, steve," sam says, almost in an apologetic tone.

i walk out of the room and try to figure out where they could have taken her. i feel the air in my lungs thinning, panic begins to run through my veins.

they can't do this to her. it's the reason she stayed in hiding for so long.

i turn a corner and i'm met with rhodey. he gives me a comforting smile and walks into an empty conference room. i take a seat on a chair and run my hands over my face before letting the tension escape my body through a deep breath.
