Fool's Paradise (Thominho)

Chapter 3

Thomas decided that he was going to find a way to talk to Minho one-on-one to find out what was going on.

"Hey Minho, wait up!" Thomas caught up to him as he turned around, already resurrounded by little boys. "I was wondering if we could talk later."

"About what?" He questioned. "If it's about that joke, I don't car-

"No, no." Thomas interrupted. "It's not that."

"Then what is it?" He said getting a little impatient.

"Uh, it's a little private. I need to talk to you alone." Thomas said eyeing the little boys.

"OH. Okay." He said as if realizing something. "Yeah sure. Later." And then they walked away. Throwing a smirk over his shoulder.

"Good that." Thomas wasn't too sure why Minho suddenly got so eager to talk to him, but just brushed it off as he looked for something to do until Minho wasn't busy. He saw Brenda taking inventory again so he decided he'd help with that.

As he was walking over he didn't realize he was going past the older sister of the little girl he gave his breakfast to until she called out to him. He turned to her surprised but then realized who it was.

"Oh hey." He started walking toward her now. "How was the breakfast?" He could see it was gone except for a few scraps.

"Good, good. Yeah." She told him, gesturing toward the nearly empty plates. "How was you're apple?"

"It was great. Haha. Very sweet."

"Haha. Great." She paused. "Look, I just wanted to say thank you again for giving her your food earlier. That was really generous of you."

"Nah. Don't mention it. Generous is my middle name.

"Speaking of names... What's yours?" She asked cocking an eyebrow.

"The name's Thomas. You're Genie, right?"

"Yep. That's m- Wait. You're Thomas? One of those Gladiators everyone's been talkin' about? You saved us all!" Her eyes were wide.

"Uh, it's Gladers but yeah." He chuckled nervously.

"Wow. I've heard about some of the stuff you've been through. That must've been really tough."

"Yeah it was" He said quietly.

"Could you tell me some of the stuff that happened? Like I've only heard a little and-

"I, uh, I really don't want to talk about it. I try not to think about everything that's happened. But it's okay. It's all over now" He whispered the last part more as reassurance for him than for her.

"Oh, yeah... Sorry." She said, a little embarrassed from her unthoughtfulness.

"It's okay." They both got quiet for a moment. "Uh where's your sister?" He asked, trying to break the silence.

"Oh Mittie? She's with Brenda." She said looking around. "She's one of the Gladers, right?"

"Uh no. Not exactly." He lightly laughed.

As if asking abour her summoned her, Mittie, Genie's little sister, came back.

"Oh, here she is." She said as they both turned their attention to her. "Mittie, I was thanking Thomas again for giving you his breakfast. You wanna thank him too?"

"No. I already did." Her words were short and clipped. And she just walked past Thomas and sat down with a straight face.

"But he gave you his breakfast" Genie huffed. Confused and upset at her behavior.

"He didn't have too." Again, he words were clipped and short.

"Mittie-

"Just leave me alone! I'm not thanking him again!" She nearly screamed when she said it, causing a few heads to turn. And then ran off.

Genie quickly got to her feet. "I'm really sorry. I don't know what got into her. See you later." And then she ran after her. Thomas was confused to because Mittie seemed like a completely different person than the bubbly little girl he met earlier.

Thomas remembered that Genie said she was with Brenda so he decided to do what he'd planned on doing in the first place and talk to her.

He looked around and spotted her but not before seeing Minho starring at him. He couldn't tell what emotion his face held because he quickly turned away but he could tell it wasn't a good one. Thomas was really eager to talk to him later. But until then, back to Brenda.

He walked over and she was organizing some fruit with a small group of little girls.

When he got close enough for her to notice him she looked up and smiled at him, patting the ground between her and a small blond girl.

He sat down and gave a smile to the little girl and she returned one showing some missing teeth she seemed proud of before shyly turning away.

He turned his attention back to Brenda. She was putting some grapes into a big leaf then wrapped them up. When she was done she turned to Thomas and him a quick peck on the cheek earning some ooohs and giggles from the girls.

"Settle down ladies." Brenda said, chuckling herself.

"Can I talk to you for a sec?" Thomas got up and smiled when he said it knowing that it'd cause more impromptu giggles.

"Sure." She got up too. "Keep sorting girls. I'll be right back." They went a little towards the trees then started talking.

"What'd you wanna talk about?" She popped a purple grape in her mouth.

"Well, you know Mittie. Right?"

She looked confused for a second then remembered. "Yeah, the girl with the strawberry blond hair? Genie's little sister?"

"Yeah that's her. Um, has she been acting a little strange lately?"

She thought for a moment surprised by the question. "Hmm. Now that you mention it, she has been looking a little dazed lately. But it's been on and off. Why?"

"Oh, it's probably nothing. She just blew up at Genie a minute ago and that didn't seem like her. And she was with you before she came over so I just thought I'd ask."

"Oh okay. I'll make sure to keep an eye on her and make sure she's alright. How do you know them?" She asked. Then she ate the last grape of her handful after giving Thomas a few.

"I met them this morning. I gave Mittie my breakfast when she dropped hers on accident." He said and ate a grape of his own.

"Aw that's so sweet." She looked over her shoulder at the girls. "Well I better get back over there. I'll be checking her."

"Okay. Good that." He responded and she was back with her group.

First Minho was acting weird and now Mittie. Thomas was confused. But when wasn't he?
