It had been about a month since they arrived in paradise. Things were just getting settled in their new home. They ate fruit, fish, meat from small animals, and eggs from low hanging nests. Water from rivers and streams. All of which were rationed out and prepared by Frypan. One of the few, still surviving Gladers. Their blankets were made out of coats and jackets people had with them, which were no longer needed because of the nice constant climate. They made huts to sleep in, from giant leaves and long sticks. Minho and Thomas shared one. While Brenda shared one with a girl from Group B. And Aris with a boy of similar age. Some older adults had made the rule that no one of opposite gender could sleep in the same tent unless they were married or related. A rule to which Minho oddly agreed to. Probably so Thomas couldn't share a tent with Brenda. Even after she'd helped them more then they could've hoped for, Minho still hated her guts. Thomas was curious as to why he still hated her but just left it alone.

Brenda and Thomas were kinda a thing but never really made it official. There wasn't much time to, with all of the work needed to be done anyway. They also haven't kissed since that first day there on that cliff watching the sunset, besides quick pecks from Brenda on Thomas' cheek. Thomas liked being unofficial though, for some reason. As if it took away stress. He still wasn't over Teresa's death. At some point he'd thought they'd be together. But that was long before she'd betrayed him. He could only imagine what it'd be like if she'd made it. If it would've been awkward with both Teresa and Brenda around. He was terribly sad that she died, but relieved that he didn't have to go through that.

He was standing at the same cliff, from that first day. Looking out at the ever rinsing sun. He turned around and observed the people around him. Frypan was cooking breakfast for the many people with the help from some adults. Obviously not pleased with their assistance. Brenda was taking inventory on some supplies being brought in. And Minho was judging a quick race some boys were having so they'd quit asking him.

Minho had become an idol to most of the young boys there. They admired his strength, and how he took charge immediately when something went wrong. Even before some adults did. Whenever he went on treks through the forest to scavenge for food or materials, the boys would often crowd around him asking if they could go. To that Minho would roll his eyes and sigh exaggeratedly, but then he would throw them one of his infamous smirks letting them know they could. It also let Thomas know that Minho actually enjoyed the attention. He also grabbed the attention of some older teen girls, and even some of the younger ones. But he subtly rejected them all. Thomas assumed it was because he was too busy to be messing around with girls.

After Minho judge the race, which he said was a tie, (probably to spare both of their feelings) he was ready to go on another trek. As soon as he announced it, as usual the little boys surrounded him, jumping up and down, pleading to go. After his routine "eye roll, sigh, and smirk" he noticed Thomas looking at him. Minho spread out his arms toward the boys, nodded and smirked at Thomas, as if he was showing off his sea of prepubescent boys. Thomas just rolled his eyes and threw his arm out in an "whatever" gesture smiling back. Then they were off. The boys mimicked battle cries as the followed their leader.

Thomas also admired Minho. He didn't know how he could be so strong. He'd watch his some of his friends die one by one also. (Minus Newt. He still hadn't told him.) Thomas was a mess when they died and he'd only known them for at least a month. He couldn't imagine how Minho wasn't since he'd known them for years. Either Minho was tough or a really good actor, or both, but either way, Thomas adored him as much as those boys.

Brenda got the same treatment in terms of idolization. All the little girls loved her and said they wanted to be like her when they grew up. Brenda not only let them go on her treks, she encouraged it. Sometimes she even would have competitions against Minho and the boys. Whenever Minho's team lost, Thomas could tell he was angry, but he kept his composure for the boys' sake. Brenda also did big sisterly things like combed their hair from makeshift combs made of wood and taught them other girly things, Thomas couldn't remember. But he could tell that she was a great roll model for the girls. Like Minho, she also grabbed the attention of "potential suitors". But she didn't blow them off. She didn't need too. Jorge did that for her. Since he was a father figure to her, he was protective and wasn't gonna let any of those guys near her. Even though he knew the unserious terms Brenda and Thomas were on, he still often gave him the stink eye if he was around her. Jokingly of course.

Thomas took another look around the area. The usual hustle and bustle was a little slower than their first days there because things are more settled. He turned back around and sat on the edge of the cliff like he did that first day, and felt at peace. He could only hope that this state of tranquility would last.
