I stepped out into the yard, ignoring the dewdrops from the early rainfall on my bare feet as I walked to the koi pond. I sighed, bending down to examine them for a moment while I had some peace and quiet.
“I’m very sorry to have you brought you into this mess,” I turned around to see Shigure nearing me. “I’m sure you understand that the Sohma family is much more difficult than we present at face value?”
“Oh-” I turned to him, glancing around the yard for the other Sohmas. “Well- you could say that.” I agreed faintly.
He chuckled. “The Sohmas’ have a long history, I'll bet Haru hasn’t told you just how different from normal people we are, has he?”
I shook my head. “No, I don’t know very much about the secret I’m afraid.”
“I’m not surprised, given his past and-”
“Shigure.” Haru’s voice was sharp, angry.
“Oh hush Haru, I’m just chatting with Mei.” Shigure waved his hand in dismissal before Haru came into my peripheral. “I’ll leave you kids alone, why don’t you get dried off and we’ll have dinner? We’d love to have you if you’ll stay Mei.”
“Thank you Shigure-san, if it’s not too much trouble then I’d love to stay.” I smiled, bowing graciously. I turned to Haru as Shigure walked off, smiling. “Hey.”
“Here.” He handed me a pile of clothes, glaring off after Shigure. “Did he say something stupid to you?”
I exchanged the clothes in his hand with the towel around my neck, shaking my head. “No, he just apologized for your family being crazy.” I ran a hand through my hair, letting the last of the rain fall from it with a sigh. “I agree, the more I get to know about your family, the more confused I get.”
He grunted, glancing up at the blue sky. “It stopped raining. How are you feeling?”
“Better.” We started back up for the house. “I might get a little sniffle or a small cold or something, but I’ll be fine. I’ll just wait it out like last time. It’s not the first time we’ve been caught in the rain.”
“Are you sure? Hatori’s going to stop by at some point. You should have him check you out.” He reached over and put a hand on my forehead for a moment, his fingers lightly brushing my temple while his eyes scanned my face, as if searching for something. Then he pulled away, narrowing his eyes once again and turning towards the stairs. “Go get changed.”
I furrowed my brow, watching him make his way up the stairs and out of my vision. “What-” I questioned, putting my hand up to the spot his hand just been. “Was that?” I shook my head, turning into the bathroom and shut the door behind me with a frown.
The clothes that Haru had given me belonged to Tohru, a soft blush pink sweater top and white tennis skirt. “Leave it to the fashionista to give me a full wardrobe-” I chuckled, stripping out of my wet clothes and tugged on the dry ones, adjusting them in the mirror above the sink. They were a bit small, seeing as they were Tohru’s, but they worked for the time being.
When I opened the door, Tohru was standing there, a wide smile on her face. “Mei-san!” She exclaimed, grabbing my arm. “Kisa-san changed back!”
“She did?” I asked curiously, glancing into the living room. “Where is she?”
“She’s upstairs- I came downstairs to see how you were.” She gave me a calmer smile, putting her hands behind her back as she bounced on her heels.
“Can I help you with anything?” I looked around. “You have your hands full, and I feel like I’m interrupting in your home-”
“Nonsense!” She waved her hand. “I’ll go hang your clothes up to dry, why don’t you go sit with Hatsuharu-san and Kyo-san? I’m sure they’d love to have your company!”
“Oh- are you sure?”
"Well, unless you'd rather come upstairs with me?"
I thought for a moment, debating between going to sit with Haru on the porch or with Tohru upstairs. “I think I should give Kisa-san some space, if you don’t mind.” Not that I wanted to bother the boys either, I felt more comfortable with Haru than I did the little girl.
“You’re so thoughtful Mei-san.” Tohru mulled. “I’ll go hang your clothes up now, don’t worry about anything else! You’re always welcome at the Sohmas!”
Those words struck me like bullets, making me smile. “Welcomed- Th-thank you.” I rubbed my neck. “I’ll uh- get going now.”
I made a dash out of the room, eyeing Kyo and Haru sitting on the porch, leaning against the wooden pillars. “Hey,” I started, causing Kyo to jump. “Ah- sorry! Thank you for the clothes Haru- even if they’re a little small-” I sat down between them, letting my legs swing over the edge of the porch.
He turned to look at me, eyeing me up and down once over before turning his head back around. “Looks good on you.”
“Eh?!” I tugged at the bottom of the shirt, glaring at him. “You’re bullying me, aren’t you? Jackass.”
“Well then, stop being so ugly.” He rolled his eyes, the tease evident in his tone.
“Jeez, you two argue like this all the time?” Kyo grunted. “Man, I don’t know what Shigure sees with you. Cause all I see is two hard headed brats-”
“Fuck you!” Haru and I spat, glaring at him.
“Hm-” Haru hummed. “I wasn’t kidding, pink suits you.”
I turned to look at him, but he just had that same spacey look as always on his face. I glared daggers into him, annoyed. “Now I know you’re just being a jackass.”
“Whatever you want to think.” He hummed. “I’m gonna go check on Kisa.” He stood up, leaving Kyo and I on the porch.
“Uh-” I turned to look at him. “I’m very sorry, I swear we don’t fight constantly-”
“So I’ve heard.” Kyo stood up, glancing down at me. “I think he was complimenting you just now, in his own Haru kind of way.” He turned and left, leaving me alone.
“Huh?” My cheeks flushed with heat, making me scowl. “What the hell?!”
