"What?"

I stared at my aunt, wide-eyed with shock.

"Well, it's just that we need to really start saving up for when Olive goes to college." my aunt responded.

"But I just turned 18 a week ago." I reasoned. "Not even, it's been like - what? - 6 days??"

"Yes, but you have enough money in the bank to start you off." she said quickly.

"I don't even make enough to afford rent for an apartment every month." I pointed out.

"You can start asking for more hours then." she suggested. "It's fine, we'll give you month to get everything settled, okay?"

"But- I won't be able to go to college if I start living on my own now." I stated as my aunt got up from my bed.

"Well I'm sure you can figure it out." she responded as she straightened her shirt. "You're a big girl now, Scarlet."

She then turned and headed towards the door.

"Oh, by the way-" my aunt said as she opened the door and turned to look at me. "-I suggest you make your own bank account soon."

With that, she closed the door and left. I sat on my bed with my back leaning on the pillow which was against the headboard. My mouth was slightly open with shock as I tried to comprehend what my aunt had told me.

She came into my room letting me know that we needed to talk. That's when she proceeded to tell me that since I was 18 now, I needed to start living on my own.

My parents died in a car accident when I was 3 years old and my aunt along with her husband took me in. They also have a daughter named Olive who is 2 years younger than me.

I had always been grateful that they took me in since it meant that they had to raise 2 toddlers at the same time and provide for me. I did notice, however, that when I tried to express my gratitude towards them, they would give short answer replies. Meanwhile, if Olive did the same thing I did, they would completely gush over her and shower her with love.

I was fine with it though. It would make sense to me that they would have more love towards their own daughter rather than their niece.

I didn't think they would do this though. Tell me to leave and live on my own when I just turned 18 without any sort of heads up.

I took in a large breath and let it out through a sigh. I grabbed my phone that was on my desk next to my bed and began texting my manager.

"Hey Jerry, is there anyway I can start getting more hours? I'm going to begin looking into apartments and I don't make enough currently to cover the cost of rent and extra necessities every month. We can talk more about this when I come in for my next shift. Thank you :)"

I closed my phone after sending the message and pulled the sheets over me as I laid down.

How am I even going to afford to pay for my phone bill?
