Life was awful. It had been a few days since Peter had broken up with you, and you have hated every one. You can still see him now, and hear the way he said he never wanted to talk to you again. You thought your heart broke when you told him goodbye one year ago, but this is much worse. At least then you knew he loved you, but now, you know he doesn't care about you at all. Cyndi's attitude makes the whole thing even worse. She can't help but smirk viciously at you from across the room, or walk hand in hand with Peter down the halls when she knows you least want to see her. All in all, you are utterly miserable.

The only one good thing about the whole ordeal is Michelle. Her overwhelming kindness and friendliness to you has helped you through everything Cyndi and Peter have done to you. You two hang out together all the time, both at school or at your homes. Without her, you're not sure how you could stand the heartbreak you're feeling. When you told her this, she just smiled. "Don't worry about it! Besides, you're helping me not make a fool of myself in front of the soccer team captain (who has a girlfriend!), so we both need each other equally. And I do feel bad that I told you to go talk to him. I kind of feel like that was my fault." You just shake your head. "It was good advice, it's just that Peter doesn't want to have anything to do with me."

Eventually, you both decide that your mutual pining is getting you nowhere, which is when Michelle comes up with an excellent idea: self care day. "The way I see it, we're both spending all our time thinking about some boy who isn't worth our time, so what if we think instead about ourselves?" You immediately agree, so you two set out on one of the best days of your life. You and Michelle try to do everything you can, so you paint your nails, walk around the city, watch a movie, drive around with your windows rolled down and music blaring, and most importantly, go to the mall. You take turns trying on the gaudiest dresses you can find, and you think you win that mini competition when you find a long dress with a train that's covered entirely in large, round, neon sequins. You wear it with a pair of heels that are so high you can barely walk, and you and Michelle dissolve in laughter. After that, you walk around some shops and eat ice cream. Your fun is only cut short when you see the one person you're trying desperately to avoid: Peter Maximoff.

The second you see him, you pull Michelle into the opening of the closest store. "What is it?" She asks, doing her best to wave off a concerned cashier. "It's Peter. Look!" And there he is, arm and arm with his current girlfriend Cyndi. You let out a sigh of frustration. "Why does he have to be here?" Michelle just swats your arm and laughs. "He looks absolutely miserable with her!" It's true, they're walking hand in hand, with Cyndi prattling on about some designer brand she just found out about. Peter looks like he could die from boredom- but he's coming this way! "You know what, let's just walk right by them. We're having a great time, they're not, who cares? I'm not letting them ruin our day." You grab Michelle's arm and the two of you walk confidently out of the store. The second Peter sees you, he looks up longingly at you. Cyndi sees him looking at you and glares at him, doing her best to redirect his attention back to you. "Hey Peter!" You give him a cool wave just to mess with Cyndi, who gives you a venomous look. Once they are out of sight, you and Michelle look at each other and start laughing again. "To actually having a good time together." You say, raising your ice cream in a toast. Michelle clinks her ice cream against yours. "To having a good time!"

Cyndi is seething when you return to school the next Monday. Apparently, Peter didn't pay attention to her for the rest of the date, and he actually made up an excuse and left about fifteen minutes after you saw them in the mall. You're not really surprised about that, Peter's always had a short attention span, but Cyndi sees it as your fault nonetheless. She makes it her personal mission to bother you whenever she sees you, whether that means making snide comments under her breath whenever she walks by you or trying to swat your books out of your arms when you're in the hallways. You do your best to not let it bother you, especially since you can literally just walk away from her, but that just makes Cyndi more mad. Her anger grows and grows, until it finally reaches a boiling point one day after school.

You're just about to head home, walking around the corner of the school when you hear someone coming up behind you. You turn around to see Cyndi, absolutely furious. "Well, look who it is. If it isn't Y/N? The one girl who I absolutely can't stand!" You just say 'Hello' back and turn around, but she runs in front of you. "No, you don't get to leave. Do you know what Peter just said to me? He told me that I should leave you alone. Do you know how mad that makes me? All this time he's been just focused on me, and I literally got him to break up with you for me. What did you do to make him defend you?" You shrug. "Last time I checked he didn't want anything to do with me. Guess that's your problem." This only makes Cyndi angrier. "No, it's yours! I've hated you ever since you stepped foot into this school. People should be talking about me, not some new girl! So I flirted with Peter to get him away from you. And it worked- until now." You step back in shock. "You did all that- insulted me, convinced Peter to break up with me, and made yourself his girlfriend just because you were jealous that people weren't giving all of their attention to you?" Cyndi scoffs. "Of course. As if I cared about Peter." A sudden voice from behind you makes you spin around. "Well that's great to hear." It's none other than Peter. Cyndi starts stammering. "I didn't- it's not what it sounds like- it's not-" He cuts her off. "I think it's exactly what it sounds like. Get out." He points a finger away from them and Cyndi has no choice but to storm away from you two. Peter turns back to you. "I'm sorry, Y/N. Really, I am. I had no idea that's how she felt, and I feel so bad that I've been treating you so awfully all this time. I love you, Y/N, and I wish I never spoke to Cyndi in my life." He leans in to kiss you, but you move away from him. He looks up at you, confused.

"You can't just do that, Peter! You don't get to treat me badly, and ignore me for weeks, and then just expect me to take you back! I'm not just some girl you can fall back to if Cyndi didn't work out! I trusted you, and I trusted that you actually cared about me. I just wish you didn't let me down." Peter looks thunderstruck. "Y/N, I-" Now it's your turn to cut him off. "I'm not just a rebound from some other girl. I'm sorry, Peter, but if you actually loved me it wouldn't have been so easy to leave me for someone else." And with that, you walk away, leaving a stunned Peter in your wake.
