Joyce, Will's mother, peered out at them, looking flustered. "Is Will here?" Mike pressed. The woman glanced over her shoulder quickly, before waving her hand dismissively at them. "You know what, now is not really a good time .." "Is he okay?" Ember asked anxiously. Joyce sighed, before stepping out onto the porch in front of them, causing them to move back from the door, which she shut behind her. "Yeah, you know, he's. .. just not feeling real well."

She gently put her hands on the pairs shoulders, steering them away from the house. "He's laying down, so I'll tell him you stopped by, okay?" She turned to go back inside. Ember began to walk away, defeated, but Mike stood his ground.

"It's about the Shadow Monster, isn't it?" Joyce turned to face him, clearly startled by the mention of the ominous creature, and pulled the pair inside.

"It's like... it's like I feel what the Shadow Monster's feeling."

Mike and Ember had been ushered into Will's room by Joyce, where they had found him drenched in sweat, his eyes wide with fear. They hadn't even taken in fully the mass of scribbled drawings taped all over the house, which Mike was now examining. Ember was sitting on Will's bed, listening to him sympathetically. He didn't deserve to go through all this. She once again felt the desperate urge to protect him, to save him from this demon that was eating him up inside.

Mike turned away from the drawings to face him. "Like in the Upside Down?"

Will nodded slightly, his voice shaking. "Some of him is there. But some of him is here too."

"Here like, in the house?"

"In this house, and.." His face screwed up as he fought back tears. "...In me" Ember gently took his hand in hers, ignoring its clammy feeling, and squeezed it tight, reassuring the boy.

He continued "It's like.. it's like he's reaching into Hawkins more and more. And the more he spreads, the more connected to him I feel." Mike was now sitting on the right side of the shaking boy, Ember on the left. "And the more you see these now-memories."

"At first, I just felt it in the back of my head. I didn't even really know it was there. It's like, when you have a dream and you can't remember it unless you think really hard. It was like that. But now it's like. Now I remember. I remember all the time."

"Maybe.. maybe that's good."

Ember stared at Mike in shock. How could he say that when he could clearly see how upset his bestfriend was by these episodes? "Good?!"

"Just think about it, Em" Mike said "Will's like a spy now. A superspy. Spying on the Shadow Monster" He stated reassuringly. Will didn't say anything, but Ember felt his iron tight grip on her hand loosen slightly as Mike continued. "If you know what he's seeing and feeling, maybe that's how we can stop him." He paused to look around at all the drawings on the walls. "Maybe all of this is happening for a reason" He finished, in a comforting tone.

"You really think so?"

Ember looked at Will, who's face seemed more relaxed, as he stared at Mike.

"Yeah. Yeah, I really do." Mike said earnestly.

But Will glanced down nervously at something on the floor. Ember and Mike followed his gaze to a drawing thrown down beside all of Will's art supplies. The drawing of the Shadow Monster.
