Chapter Ten: Their Heart’s Desire

Jong In’s POV

“Do you think I cared about you?”

“Don’t misunderstand.”

“When we get back to Korea, don’t act like we know each other.”

All lies. Words I didn’t mean, but wanted to believe.

When I saw those men coming towards her, I wanted to kill them, but why? Why didn’t I just let take her and run? Why did I get so involved with her in the first place?

Is it because…..

No. I assured myself. Who would I care about a scum like her?

“Young man…” Spoke a old woman in Korean. “Would you like to buy a wish?” She continued, patting my back, trying to coax me into visiting her strange store.

She looked weak and lacked assistance. Doesn’t she have a granddaughter or grandson who could help her? Her eyes twinkled with an essence of captivation and a bit of meaning.

“You won’t be disappointed.” She laughed, “Now, come and find what your heart desires.”

Trying not to disappoint her, I shyly followed. The shop had a mysterious atmosphere, a strange aura I could not distinguish. Walls were covered in tall shelves, each containing tiny bottles that held little slips of paper.

Where is everybody? It feels like I’m the first person to step into this shop in a hundred years.

Sure, I’ll buy a little wish. It’s like a little souvenir, something for fun. Besides, I think she needs the money anyway.

As I searched through the endless wishes, containing prayers hoping for money, love, grades, etc., I stumbled upon a wish that jumped out me.

It read: True Wish in bold script across the hand drawn label. If you let it,  this wish will make what your heart deeply desires come into reality.

“Ah… does that wish intrigue you?” She smiled a mysterious smile. “I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you take that wish home with you?”

“Eh?” I gasped. “There’s no need, really. I can pay for it myself!” I politely hollered back to her.

“No. I can tell. It is your destiny to have this wish. I only ask you honor it in your heart.”

After I left the strange shop, I realized something.

This entire experience is just weird, really. An old lady who speaks Korean out of all languages, and then insists on me taking one of her peculiar wishes for free? Weird.

Finally, I reached the dorm and got ready for bed. I set the bottled wish on my nightstand, like the old woman had told me and slept through the night, still feeling regret towards Kyung Sae.

That same night…

Narrator POV

“What do I truly desire?” I  Kyung Sae asked herself as she clutched the tiny bottle to her heart.

Tiffany, meanwhile was performing her nightly beauty routine, cleansing her face with what looked like a super expensive cleanser. Next, she toned her face and applied serum. Lastly, she applied some moisturizer and patted her face with content.

“Why do you care so much about your face?” asked Kyung Sae.

While beginning to brush her hair, Tiffany said, “I actually take care of myself, unlike you who lets herself get walked all over by some guy.”

“Hey. Let’s not talk about that right now. I’m not in the mood.”

She remembered the scenes she had experienced today like a rush of cold air after stepping outside, fast and painfully chilling. Kyung Sae, who had burst into tears as soon as she reached the dorm room had no idea why she was crying. Despite the amounts of people she was around, she sat on the bench for a while as Jong In’s words playing through her head like an endless loop, refusing to stop. There she sat until she noticed a old woman stumble down through the crowds of people.

“You o-okay?” Kyung Sae sniffed in english as she rushed to help the woman up.

“Gwenchana. Han kook mal hamnida.” spoke the lady, surprising the young girl who was helping her up.

The older, who seemed to look at Kyung Sae like they had already met, patted her on the back and thanked her.

“Now… I work at a shop and I can’t seem to sell anything.” she started. “For helping me, would you please take this?” The woman held out her hand, containing a small bottle.

True Wish was written across the label. “I assure you, if you let it, this will make the wish you truly desire come true.” Said the woman.

“Uh, thank you…” Kyung Sae said in disbelief, but wanted to be polite at the same time.

“Take care” Whispered the mysterious lady, and within seconds, she was gone.

Returning to the present, Kyung Sae set the bottled wish on her nightstand, motioned for Tiffany to go to bed, and turned out the lights.

And warmly, the old woman who had given the two wishes grinned and knew what they had in store.

“Three words…” she whispered to herself. “Three words…”
