cass cracked her door open and stepped out into the dark hall, dimly lit by the moonlight. she noticed on the door across from her's a sliver of light radiating from under the door, almost inviting, almost calling her in. she tiptoed, barefoot, creaking a loose floorboard and then stopping in front of pedro's door. hesitating if she would really bother him right now just for some excitement, she stopped for a second, her fist held up to the door. might as well.
when she rapped on the door three times, lightly yet still hard enough to be heard, cass heard some rustling from the bed and soft footsteps on the old floor. she swore that the whole world could hear the violent thumping of her heart as she waited in the dark, anticipation overwhelming.
the door opened to reveal a frazzled pedro, rubbing his face to rid himself of sleep and sighing. "yes?"
"um- sorry to interrupt."
"nah, don't worry about it."
"hm, ok." cass smiled, hoping she'd get to the point of her interaction soon enough. "i uh- just wanted to ask if you needed anything? are you good?"
"thank you, cass. i'm alright, no need to worry."
cass, nodded, biting her lip and smiling as she got a bit lost in the ridges of his face, wringing her hands. "i also wanted to tell you that we leave at 9 for the river tomorrow."
"cool, cool. i'll be up by then." he replied with a smile. cass noticed that all his reactions and mannerisms were merely friendly, but she decided to stay in that little daze of hers that told her that every single thing he did had some sort of hidden meaning.
"alright. have a nice night mr pascal."he softly sighed a chuckle, "save me the niceties cass, i couldn't care less."
"okay pedro..." she chuckled at the man's casualness.
"have a nice night cass." he said, going to shut his door.
"you too, pedro, "
after the door scuffled shut, cass's face was burning a red blush, a smile impossibly stamped on her face as she replayed the interaction and his smile and his gaze all over again, walking over to her door and then taking a moment to glance at the sliver of light before she went into her room.

the sun shone softly on the veranda the next morning as cass, her father, and her uncle leo sat down at the table at the terrace, a wide array of breakfast foods already laid on the table even if it was early, nearly 7am. cass and her father were used to waking up early, a habit of theirs back in new york, and leo was just there because he'd stayed up all night, restless in his studio because of an imperfect painting.
"c'est ridicule!" he exclaims, cranky and visibly tired, taking a bite of his toast.
"alors ne soyez pas obsédé par ça, leo!" cass's father argues back, throwing his hands in the air.
