Anna's POV
"She got hit in the chest with a rock, please help her now." Chris pleaded at the front desk.
"You may have to wait a while. She isn't first priority." the old nurse informed us.
I felt a hard pang at my chest again and stumbled back. Jeanine caught me.
"Is she first priority now?" Chris snapped.
The nurse quickly tapped on her computer.
"Room 206 is free." She said timidly.
A nurse came over with a wheelchair and Jeanine helped me into it.
She wheeled me into room 206 and they lifted me into a bed and lifted up my shirt. I saw a nurse whisper something to Chris and Jeanine as they made their way out of the room.
A nurse pressed on my ribs and I felt something cracking. I yelled in pain.
"There is definitely a broken rib. A bruise is forming. There may be signs of internal bleeding. You're going to need a blood donor."
"Internally bleeding?" My voice cracked.
"It is very minor. Do you know your blood type?"
I wracked my brain. We took blood tests in biology.
"AB negative."
"I will be right back." She walked out of the dim room towards the nurses station. The door clicked shut behind her.
It is a good thing I got here when I did. Chris has been great to me this whole time. He never left my side. I could tell he cared a lot.
The nurse came back in, carrying a large white bandage.
"This is a temporary bandage." She came over and wrapped the bandage around my chest.
"Bad news is that we don't have any AB negative blood at the blood bank. Good news is that it is genetically transferred. Do you have any siblings?"
I looked down at the IV in my arm.
"Yes, but she won't come."
The nurse frowned. "I will try my best to look for donors. Just hang tight."
She squeezed my hand then left.
I laid back on the soft pillow and closed my eyes. I just wanted everything to go back to normal. I wanted to be home on the couch with Hal, I wanted Elsa to be back, I wanted my parents to be alive.
I took my cellphone off of the side table and dialed Hal's number.
It rang a few times, then I heard someone pick up.
"H-Hal?"
"Yeah, Anna, it's me. Where are you?"
I hesitated before I answered. "The hospital."
"What?! The hospital? Are you ok?!"
I looked down at my bandage. "It's just a little cut, no big deal."
"Did you find Elsa?"
I looked out the window. The sun was coming up.
"We found her. But she told us to leave."
I picked at my remaining pink nail polish.
"Can you come?"
"Yeah, of course. Be there in five."
Thank God. I hung up the phone and leaned back on the pillow. I closed my eyes and tried to rest. This wound couldn't heal fast enough. I needed to get Elsa back. I didn't care if it took forty more rocks, I would do whatever it takes to keep the only family I had.
I heard a quiet scratching on the door. I got up and opened it slightly.
Olaf sat at the door, his snowy fur gleaming in the white hospital lights.
I smiled. "Come on in, buddy."
He hopped inside and under the bed.
"Where are you going, Olaf?"
I frowned and laid back down on the bed. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
I heard the door creak open.
I opened my eyes and saw Hal's gleaming face staring back at me. A large burly man with dark brown hair stood behind him. I smiled and he smiled back.
He sat down in the chair next to the bed and motioned for the man to stay outside.
"What happened?" He stroked my face and I held his hand.
I explained to him what happened in as less detail as possible.
"Oh Anna-"
"Hal, it's ok. I'm fine."
"Where is Elsa?"
"On the outskirts of the north side of town. The old James street."
"I'll go." He stood up.
"No, she is too dangerous. And I want you to stay here with me. What is your blood type?" It was worth asking.
"AB negative."
I almost had a heart attack.
I smiled. "Hal, will you be my blood donor?"
He leaned over so our faces were inches apart.
I pursed my lips and closed my eyes.
"No." He whispered.
I opened my eyes.
"W-What?"
He stood back up.
"I see it already, 'Man saves mayor's daughter, girlfriend tragically dies.'"
My mouth dropped open. He was smiling. Why was he smiling? How could he wish for something that sick?
"Let me explain, I save Elsa and everybody commemorates me for finding a number one priority on the missing persons list. But when I get back, you can't find a blood donor in time and sadly die. I sob on camera and the entire nation looks at this tragic event."
I almost threw up. I can't believe it. He was playing me the whole time.
"Why would you do that?"
"You think I get much attention these days? I was supposed to be the son who succeeded and went to Yale and got a pretty girl and a nice big family, make my brothers look stupid. But instead I go to NYU and get dumped a few times and almost get suspended while my brothers are off making history with their beautiful grades at Stanford and Harvard. I needed to prove to my parents that I could be successful, I could save the day. Then you come along and Elsa goes missing and it's like somebody just handed me the cure to cancer."
It took me a while to process what he was saying. Go through all of this and kill somebody just to get a little attention? It didn't make sense.
"I'm not going to die you know, I'm going to tell everyone and you will get attention, from your warden!"
He grinned. "That's why I have a plan B."
He walked over to the cabinet and pulled out a long needle and a small capsule of something. He pushed the needle into the capsule and pulled up the plunger.
"Now this liquid will make you very tired. Luckily, it won't be a painful death. Just the right amount for an underage female should do the trick."
He pulled the needle out and flicked the glass a few times.
"Nurs-" I started to scream but he shoved a cloth in my mouth.
I fought back and tried to get out of the bed but he slammed my arm down and injected the fluid into my bloodstream.
He pulled the needle out and smiled.
"It's really a shame that we had to end it like this. I was just starting to think you were pretty."
My vision got blurry. My eyelids starting dropping and the room spun around me.
"Goodbye Anna."
