Alex’s POV
After group was over, Julie came and escorted the beautiful girl and I out to the rec room.
“Everyday after group you guys can come here and just hang out.” Julie smiled. I caught a glimpse of Mackenzie rolling her eyes. I laughed to myself. “Or you can just go your rooms. There’s a schedule of the activities over there,” she pointed to a wall with a huge bulletin board with a schedule on it, “You’re going to be in here for most of the day, so enjoy it. I’ll catch up with you guys later.” She said and smiled.
Mackenzie went straight to her room. Man, this girl is interesting. I went to the rec room and sat on the large, gray, stained couch beside the chubby girl, Carmen, from group. Everyone was having a conversation with someone. I felt out of place and awkward so I went to my room.
Mackenzie’s POV
Group was terrible. An hour filled with depressed people, complaining about their problems. Ugh. A short nurse named Julie took the cute boy from group to the rec room. She showed us the schedule and I left to my room. Lucy wasn’t there so I plopped myself down on my bed and sighed. This is going to suck.
I must’ve fallen asleep because an hour later, Julie was shaking me awake.
“Time for lunch!” she smiled. All of us walked to the cafeteria. It looked like the one at my school. There were a few long tables, with plastic chairs surrounding it. Everyone lined up in front of a kitchen. I grabbed a tray and some cutlery and went with the flow. When I got to the front, a tired looking lady with a hairnet put a gross looking sandwich on my plate then filled a bowl with soup. It smelled terrible. I walked over to the tables and picked a spot farthest from everyone. I picked at my food.
“Our policy is you gotta eat sweetheart,” a tall lady with blonde hair put her hand on my back and smiled. Great. I took a bite of the sandwich and almost spit it out. Nasty. I ate what I could and went back to my room to lie down. This time Lucy was there.
“So why are you in this shit hole?” she said.
I didn’t respond.
“Why don’t you talk?” she asked.
I didn’t respond.
“I can see your wrist you know.” She said quietly.
I blushed and pulled my sleeve down to cover my scars.
“Sorry.” She mumbled and left the room.
I pulled my sleeve up and admired my cuts. I always liked the look of them as weird as that sounds. They’re like battle scars. Julie coming into my room interrupted me so I quickly pulled my sleeve down and looked up.
“Sweetie it’s your turn for counseling.” She said. Counseling? Ugh, I don’t need counseling. Julie walked me to a small office. It was pretty bare. There was a large burgundy desk with a large black chair behind it. There was a smaller black chair on the opposite side.
“Dr. Gordon will be right with you.” She said and smiled. I turned my head and rolled my head. A few minutes later an average sized woman with blonde walked in. She was wearing a lab coat and carrying a clip board and notebook.
“Hello Mackenzie, I’m Dr. Gordon.” She stuck her hand out for me to shake it. I ignored it. She sighed and walked over to the big chair on the other side of the desk.
“I’ve heard you don’t talk much.” She said sitting down.
I stared at my shoes.
We sat there in silence for the next hour. Dr. Gordon dismissed me to my room for “reflection”. Yeah right. I went to the bathroom in my room. They have a paper towel dispenser there. Yes! I thought to myself. I scratched my wrist against the spikes and pulled my sleeves down. I walked to the rec room. Carmen was reading, the crazy dude was staring at the ceiling blinking away and the really cute guy, named Alex was sitting on the couch. I was going to sit by him but Julie walked in and told him it was time for his personal counseling session. Dang. I sat on the couch and stared blankly at the TV playing Wheel Of Fortune.
