6 YEARS ON

There were times that Yunlan thought he had dreamed the whole thing. Meeting a human, feeling connected to him, begging his family to save him. He vaguely recalled a strong jawline, a nose that veered just a bit to one side, and eyes that were blue. As a boy, he used to layer his crayons and pencils one on top of the other, trying to capture the perfect shade, but seven years later, the image in his head was so fuzzy that he couldn't see the color in his mind's eye, let alone attempt to recreate his mates face.

But while his memory had once been strong nobody spoke of the day in the Dragon City hotel room when his family had met a human and agreed to save his life by turning him into a vampire. With as little as he remembered and his family's refused Shen Wei to speak of that day, Yunlan should have thought none of it had been real. Details of his mate and their interaction had waned, but with every fading memory a pressure inside Yunlan grew bigger, sharper, until his veins thrummed with the knowledge that part of him belonged to someone else. That was how Yunlan knew he could not exist without his mate. It was how he knew he had to go and meet Shen Wei.

And it was why he was on the phone with Shu Chu Zhi, talking him into something they both knew wasn't a good idea.

"Dude, that's a really bad idea," said Chu.

"I know." Yunlan saw no point in denying the obvious. "But I'm going to do it anyway so I need your help."

"Fuck," Chu said, a chuckle in his voice. "What if I call your Dad?" "He will worry when I do it anyway."

"I'm pretty sure your Dad will watch you like a hawk if they hear about your plan to leave pack lands and go to lord knows where all by yourself. Do you know how stupid that is, Yunlan ?"

"I already agreed that it's a bad idea. And my Dad and Uncle can't watch me every second of every day forever. So are you going to save their sanity by telling them I'm coming to visit you or are you going to selfishly make them sick with worry by refusing to help me?"

"Dammit." Chu'sloud sigh came through the phone. "Tell me where you're going that's so super-

secret squirrel you need to lie to the family."

"Better that you don't know. Plausible deniability."

"Cut the shit, Yunlan. If you want me to put my ass on the line with ,you damn well better tell me what you're up to."

Biting his lower lip, "I'm going to Guardian City ."

"Guardian City ? You're fourteen years old"

"I have a mate. He's a vampire. He lives there"

Silence came from the other end of the line for several long moments and then Chu chuckled and said, "Well shit. I didn't see that coming. I thought you forgot about him. Remember you are going to be Alpha, why do you want to do this?."

"You really think a pack is going to accept an Alpha whose mate is male and isn't a shifter?"

Yunlan said disbelievingly. "There's a lot of years before we need to think about that. Right now, I just want you to back me up when I tell my parents I'm coming to visit you."

"Sure thing."

"Really?" Yunlan asked, suspicious about the change of heart.

"Yep. Not a problem. You'll come here and we'll catch a bus to Vegas together. ""You're fourteen years old, Yunlan. Fourteen. You want to see your mate? I get that, man, I do. But I'm going with you. That's not up for debate."

"Fine."

"You're welcome, dickwad."

Yunlan rolled his eyes. "Thanks, Chu."
