For the rest of the day, (Y/N) was on edge, though she did feel a little calmer now that Alex was gone. She hated that he still had this effect on her, after two and a half years, but he did. The moment she saw him, she just shut down. Worse, in front of Daniel. And he had been really supportive to her, but... that's not how she wanted him to find out. Hell, she would've been perfectly happy if he never did find out. But he did.Still, Daniel did make her feel a lot better. He was just such a good guy. She felt really lucky to have matched with him on that dating website months ago. It could've been anybody. It could've been another Alex.
(Y/N) was pulled from her thoughts when she heard Daniel ask, "What do you want for dinner?"
She looked up at him from her spot on the floor beside Shadow, and gave a soft smile. "I'm up for anything," she answered. "Whatever you're in the mood for sounds good to me."
"How about tacos?"
She nodded. "Yeah, that sounds great," she said. She slowly stood up - much to the chagrin of the puppy who was leaning against her legs. "Do you want help?"
"I can always use your help, Ms. Garlic Master," Daniel told her, with a grin.
(Y/N) giggled softly. "Do you put garlic in your tacos?" she asked.
"Well, no, not usually," he admitted, as they walked into the kitchen together. "But I figure, if you're good with garlic, you must be good with other spices, too, yeah?"
"Fair enough." She grinned.
As they prepared the meal, she found herself getting distracted. Although she felt better, the stress of earlier left her feeling almost dazed. She knew she'd been okay - she'd been through this and worse and come out stronger on the other side - but for the moment, she was just really out of it.
Daniel must've noticed this, because, as she was working on the rice, he tossed a chopped piece of tomato at the side of her face.
(Y/N) turned away from the skillet, and saw a grin on Daniel's face. With a small grin of her own, she grabbed a couple pieces of onion, and threw them at his face.
"Ah! Not onion!" he cried, as they landed a little too close to his eyes. "You're gonna make me cry!"
She laughed a little, and as she turned to stir the rice again, she felt something land in her hair. As she glanced back at the amused Daniel, she did her best to remove the bits of what seemed to be tomato from her (H/L), (H/C) hair, a playful glare in her eyes. "Not my hair, dude!"
"Oh, but onions in my eyes are okay?" Daniel retorted.
"It wasn't in your eyes, it was near them!" (Y/N) justified. "Besides, tomatoes are worse. They're messier."
"You wanna see messy?" He raised a brow. "I'll show you messy." With that, he grabbed the bowl, and before she had time to move out of the way or even process what he was doing, he dumped the bowl of tomatoes over her head.
(Y/N) gasped. She immediately began attempting to clean herself, but there wasn't much she could do at the moment.
Daniel snickered quietly, but it was still loud enough for her to hear. In retaliation, she grabbed a handful of onions, and threw them at his face, then repeated the process until there were no more onions left in the bowl.
"Mercy! Mercy!" Daniel shouted, but the amused glint in his eyes made it clear he was having just as much fun as she was.
She wondered how he always seemed to know what to do. She had needed a distraction desperately, and he gave it to her in a fun - albeit incredibly messy - way. He seemed to know her better than most people ever did, and in such a relatively short time. Two months wasn't much, but it was enough to give her a good feeling about him.
The food fight continued, until both (Y/N) and Daniel were considerably more messy than when they started. But it was nothing compared to the state of the kitchen. In the end, the two called a truce. They grinned at each other, and for a moment, she felt completely and utterly safe.
They were closer now. Within arm's reach of one another. (Y/N) stared into Daniel's dark, blue eyes. "Thank you," she said simply.
"Any time," Daniel replied.
And then, without any hint of hesitance or doubt, she kissed him. It was brief, but sweet and sincere. There was nothing but gentlness in that kiss.
They pulled away, and (Y/N) smiled softly at the slightly pink hue of Daniel's face. She finally pulled her gaze away from his face, and looked around the kitchen.
"Well, this isn't gonna be fun to clean up."

When she arrived at her apartment, (Y/N) was exhausted. From the previous emotional stress, to the food fight and the cleaning that followed, it had been quite a day.
She stepped through the door, locking it behind her. As she walked through the apartment, it was almost totally silent. She went to check on Eliza, and saw her sleeping peacefully, with Cho-Hee cuddled up beside her on the bed.
(Y/N) stood at the doorway for a little while, just watching her friends breathe. She smiled gently, happy that they seemed so content as they slept in each other's arms, before she walked to her own room. She got ready to go to sleep as quickly as possible, letting out a quiet sigh of relief one her body finally hit the bed.
It had been quite a day indeed.
She stared up at the ceiling, and as tired as she felt, she wasn't quite ready to fall asleep yet.
She thought about her life. Her family, her friends. She thought about her first date, her first job, her first heartbreak. She thought about Alex - there was still a dull ache in her chest each time he came to mind. She thought about Daniel, and how effortlessly he made that ache go away, at least for a few moments.
It had been quite a life. Nothing too extravagant, or out of the ordinary. But unique. And, overall, it had been pretty good life. One with her fair share of tears, but one with plenty of laughter, too. Yes, it had been a good life so far.
Little did she know that it was all about to come crashing down.
