"I, Bluestar, leader of ForestClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have train hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them as warriors in their turn.
"Summerpaw, Stonepaw, Silverpaw, Wishpaw, and Barkpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and serve your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Stonepaw felt her heart pounding. She nudged Silverpaw, and they chorused, "I do!"
The other apprentices did the same, and Bluestar continued. "Then by the powers of StarClan I grant you your warrior names. Summerpaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Summerfruit. StarClan honors your energy and dedication, and we welcome you a full warrior of ForestClan.
"Stonepaw, from this moment on, you shall be known as Stonevoice. StarClan honors your stone-hard determination and your voice for peace, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ForestClan.
"Silverpaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Silverpelt. StarClan honors your calmness and kindness, which number the stars. We welcome you as a full warrior of ForestClan.
"Barkpaw, you shall be called Barkclaw, for your good hunting and fighting skills, we welcome you as a full warrior of ForestClan.
"Wishpaw, you will now be known as Wishpool, for your wisdom and serenity. We welcome you as a full warrior of ForestClan."
"Summerfruit! Stonevoice! Silverpelt! Barkclaw! Wishpool!"
The Clan's voices rang out, and Stonevoice fluffed up her fur in pride. Silverpelt was looking at the sky in awe.
"I can't believe we're warriors already!" He mewed softly.
"Great!" Summerfruit exclaimed. She smiled. "Now we can get a good night's sleep in warrior's den!"
"Actually, you won't," Mewed Rivereye, padding up to touch noses with his daughter. "you have to sit vigil tonight."
Stonevoice groaned. She'd forgotten about the vigil! Her eyelids were threatening to close at any moment.
Silverpelt, to her surprise, looked wide awake. She guessed it was from the nap he'd taken before going to the gathering.
Barkclaw looked like she'd fallen asleep on her paws. Summerfruit had to nudge her to get her to open her eyes again.
"Alright, on three, two, one," Mewed Moonbeam. Stonevoice remembered that a newly made warrior must guard the camp in silence. She clamped her muzzle shut and tried to get comfortable in the dry leaves and sand underpaw. The Moonlight shone over the clearing as the Clan padded back into their dens, except the new warriors.
Stonevoice gazed through the trees, watching the stars pass above her. Was Greenmoon watching her right now? If so, did he forgive her for being responsible for his death? She closed her eyes, trying to imagine him in StarClan right now.
She shut her eyes, trying to push away the thought, and sleep nearly overwhelmed her. She struggled not to collapse into the comforting darkness and instead focused ahead, staring right at the entrance.
Exhaustion gnawed at her like a dog, but she refused to fall . . . asleep . . .
Stonevoice was prodded hard in the side. She turned to see Silverpelt, a look of frustration on his face. Had she dozed off? It wasn't dawn yet, but the moon seemed . . . different, somehow.
She shrugged and rested her head on her paws, thinking. Was it okay to accidentally fall asleep in the middle of her vigil? She hoped that Greenmoon forgave her for that, too. Am I going to be a terrible warrior?
