When you said your last goodbye

I died a little bit inside

Theodore wrapped his arms around my shoulders as we stepped off the train and headed to the carriages. I noticed Draco Malfoy was walking besides us which confused me at first but then I remembered that he was also a friend of Theo's, so I just shrugged it off.

My feet slowed to a halt when I noticed the majestic dark creatures pulling the carriages.

"Thestrals." I glanced around to Draco's slow, quiet voice; his eyes fixed on the thestrals. He continued, "only those who have seen death can see them."

I felt a pang to my heart and once again my hands turned bloody and started shaking. Tears pricked at my eyes. I could hear someone calling my name, but it was distant.

Clutching my wand tightly in my hand, I ran in the direction of the courtyard. The halls were destroyed with bodies lying everywhere. My heart broke at the sight of the once beautiful Hogwarts, now a battlefield. Up ahead, I saw a fifth year duelling a vicious looking deatheater.

"Reducto!" I watched in satisfaction as the deatheater went flying into the air before hitting a stone pole on the other side of the hall with a loud 'crack!'. The student looked back at me, shocked that I had helped him.

"Be careful!" I yelled back at him as I continued running to the front of the school in pursuit of my best friend.

My eyes widened at the sight ahead of me. Giants thrashed the walls; huge spiders and all sorts of creepy crawlies prowled the area. Amid it all, students and teachers fought off the deatheaters. I spotted another student being cornered off by a group of deatheaters and didn't hesitate to send a hex their way.

"Sectumsempra!" I heard the curse being blasted from behind me and instinctively ducked waiting for the spell to shoot over my head...but it didn't. I looked around in confusion then let out a cry as I realised where the curse had hit. There, a couple feet away from me, lay my best friend, Natalie, blood seeping out of the large slashes caused by the curse. I scanned the area ahead in search of the perpetrator.

"What's wrong Montgomery? Losing another filthy blooded friend? You're nothing but a traitor!" Dolohov.

In a fit of rage, I screamed the first spell that came to mind.

"CRUCIO!" I held the curse for a few minutes, oblivious to his agonised screams, before letting go and watching as he slumped against the wall, wand clattering out of his hand.

I rushed back to Natalie and pulled her onto my lap. She was struggling to keep her eyes open.

"No, Nat, no stay with me," I cried, pressing my hand to her wounds to try to stop the bleeding.

"Vulnera sanentur, vulnera sanentur..." I chanted repeatedly, but it made no difference.

"No! Why isn't it working?! Nat!"

"Isabel...Iz, it's too late...there's too much blood," she rasped, clearly in pain.

"No, Natalie, no, I can't lose you, please..." I clutched her body to my chest, crying into her shoulder.
