Colourful waves painted the skies as the sun set over the sound of joyful children. The smell of greasy fair food and sickly sweet cotton candy wafted through the air, complementing the tune of a nearby carousel. It was beginning to grow dark, and the majority of families were beginning to take their leave, including Rantaro's sisters.Normally, he would've gone home with them too, but his stepmother insisted he stay. The whole day had been hot and sweaty, with various girls wanting to go everywhere at once, and although it was fun- Rantaro had to admit that having some time to check the place out on his own would be... nice.
More and more people sifted out, leaving mostly young couples to gaze at the now fully lit up rides under the darkening sky. The green haired male mostly wandered about aimlessly, unsure what to try first. It was in his blood to explore every last nook and cranny, but the fair would close soon, and he didn't want to leave without an experience.
Eventually, his strolling led him to the ferris wheel. The sight of the large wheel gave him an unexpected dose of nostalgia- it had been a long time since he was allowed to simply...be a child. He didn't mind the responsibility of being the eldest son obviously- it just caused him to miss out on some things that seemed common to the general public.
The line was surprisingly long, probably because of the attractiveness of seeing the stars from the very top. Rantaro held a soft smile as he imagined the view. He may have travelled to almost every location on the globe, but it was the small things that really mattered.
Eventually, he reached the front, as that's how lines work. He tapped his foot a bit, taking the tickets out of his pocket.
"Hey sir, your girlfriend with you? We've got a lot of people wanting to go on the wheel right now, so no singles."
Rantaro got taken aback a bit at the employee's abrupt assumptions. Girlfriend...did he honestly look that much like a straight playboy? He cringed internally a bit before offering a calm smile to the worker.
"Ahaha...that's alright...I don't really mind doubling up with a stranger."
The worker nodded confusedly, before ushering Rantaro off into one of the carts. He sat down, leaning to one side, hoping he wouldn't have to share the small space with anyone too weird.
And he didn't. After a few seconds, the door slid open again, and in stumbled another boy, looking close to Rantaro's age. He seemed rather shy and accidentally bumped into Rantaro in his nervousness.
"A-ah- sir...I'm so sorry-"
Rantaro chuckled a bit at the boy's attempt to hide his face behind the hat he wore. The other teen was awkwardly standing in front of Rantaro now, hesitantly looking back and forth between the other seat and Rantaro's facial expression.
"Ahaha- don't worry about it. And sir..? If I'm not wrong, we seem to be around the same age so...you can just call me-"
Before he could finish speaking, the ride started to move. And in true Wattpad fanfiction fashion, of course the navy haired boy fell into Rantaro's chest. It seemed awfully convenient, if Rantaro was being honest.
"Ah, mushrooms- I mean shit...you okay?"
Rantaro's face flushed, both at the fact a very attractive stranger had fallen into him and that he had accidentally used his habit of censoring curse words. The heat coming from the hatted boy's face however...
"Ohmygodimsososorryireallydidntmeantoandumthisisawkwardimsorryyourehotokaybye-"
The stranger stumbled back again, mumbling to himself. He sat firmly in the other seat, staring out the door like his life depended on it. Under no circumstances did he make eye contact with Rantaro. The tension was high, and they hadn't even gotten through one of the five turns the ferris wheel would go through...
"Hey uh...don't worry about it? We're almost to the top, and I've been told the view's really nice from there...oh and yeah, like I was saying, my name's Rantaro-"
Rantaro rambled on a bit, unsure of how to ease the other's obvious discomfort. Telling his name to an unknown person was probably not the best plan, but whatever.
After a moment or two of silence, the other one turned to face Rantaro, still looking down at his feet.
"Uh..I'm Shuichi. I'm really sorry once again-"
Rantaro cut him off.
"No need. And hey, look outside! We're almost to the top."
Shuichi turned to look, his eyes widening a bit at the sight of the carnival from a birds eye view. All of the other rides were beautifully lit up, to create an amazing spectacle.
"Hey...Rantaro...look up, the stars-"
The ceiling of the small compartment was clear, and for good reason. Thousands of little white lights broke through the endless ocean of navy, a colour that oddly reminded Rantaro of Shuichi's hair actually-
"I think that's Orion's Belt, and oh! Is that the roller coaster down there?"
Shuichi spoke giddily, all nervousness melted away by the scenery. He pointed at the things he spoke of, and it was rather endearing. He had taken off his hat at this point, and his golden eyes lit up with childlike wonder at the world around him.
Rantaro respectfully simped in silence, listening with interest to all the things Shuichi had to say.
Unfortunately however, all good things must come to an end. They spent their final round in silence, a confusing sadness brewing in both of their chests. They're just strangers- why should it even matter?
The doors slid open once again, and Shuichi timidly hopped out,
"This is going to come off as really weird but. Would you like to come with me?"
Shuichi looked at Rantaro quizzically. Sure, he did look like one of those playboys that they always show on TV- but the genuine earnestness in Rantaro's large green eyes made Shuichi stop and think. Nothing could go wrong, right?
So he let himself be dragged off.
He didn't regret it.
The rest of the night was something out of a novel, with them both trying to cram as much information about the other they could in their short time together. They shared cotton candy, lay down and watched the stars...each waiting for the other to be the one to leave, to end this dream. Because of course, it was too much of a surreal experience to be real. Nobody could have this much happiness for more than one night.
And then it did happen.
"Shuichi, I'm sorry but- I have...to g-"
"Rantaro...this is gonna sound even weirder than what you said but. Can I have your number?"
And so Rantaro allowed himself to be the one dragged off.
He didn't regret it either.
