It doesn't come off shocking that shapes are involved in a number of ways. But something that shapes can help is anatomy.
Anatomy is the toughest part, in my opinion, to get down. Knowing the formation of different species anatomy. For me, I find animals a lot easier than people, that doesn't mean I can't do people, I can, but they just aren't my specialty. It is shapes that got me through my period of anatomy study. As you gain more experience, you'll find you are using fewer shapes, and this is because the muscle memory you hold is starting to remember the shape of that thing's anatomy.
Watch for common shapes, such as those in the illustration above. Shapes are definitely not limited to what is above. I'm gonna now show you the shape skeleton of a cat, feel free to reference what you see, it can be helpful to reference another, now, never trace another's work and share it without credit, it is rude and against copyright laws as well.
Here is my take on a cat. A general feline will always have a squarish head. Versus that of a general canine, which has a more circular head. In human anatomy, there can be many different types of shapes used on a human head. Depending on your style that is.
Notice at the base of the tail, that it leaves the shape, yeah, that's completely alright!! The shapes are only there as a guide to anatomy, you can always edit your sketch afterwords, it never has to connect all the time, it is only there for reference.
It is possible for anyone to learn art, even if you weren't born with the natural gift, it is still possible. It may just take a little more work since it doesn't come naturally. But work hard and you'll get there. Never doubt yourself.
