Life's End

What would you feel if everyone believed in the cause, one that was led with extreme sacrifice in both the physical and mental sense, only to be throat punched with the truth? A cause that pushed you on for a better future, only to show you a void at the end?
Maybe I should have seen the signs that we would end up no better than those we fought against, the so called "blinded" and "evil" fellow countrymen we fought against.

I admit, I hadn't foreseen that the Communist Revolution's success would lead to the leaders of said revolution to purge its freedom fighters without remorse. It shocked me when Shock Troopers came bursting into our homes and began slaughtering my family.
It wasn't my proudest moment, and I wish I didn't have to tell you, but I ran. My two sons and only daughter? My wife? I know it's not true, but I hope they had a quick death.
I stayed in the alley ways, reading wet, crumpled news papers and sustaining myself on god knows what I could find.
The news agencies reported that the Supreme Commanders tried rebelling against the People's Chosen Council, and that quick reaction force was sent to arrest any and all soldiers that are suspected with treason, and those that did not comply or attempted to resist were to be executed along with any family members.

The next several weeks were the harshest; more and more gutter trash began to claim the alley ways, Military Police patrols began to increase, beating the homeless from supposed crimes of Social Assault (improperly greeting your superiors), to even loitering.
One night, Military Police Officers began cracking down on the alley veterans, using a chip reader, a tool used to verify occupation, clearance, name, age, ethnicity, etc, now being used to identify each of "rebelling" runaway veterans. The Military Police eventually dragged me and several others out, and were taken to the gallows. None of us spoke, but we knew what would happen to us. The People's News Paper and broadcasts boasted about it enough for the entire country to know about it; we were to be hanged in front of a camera and a live audience for the atrocities against the People's Republic of America, however true; or untrue, it might be.

My road from a Equal Rights Protester to Communist Rebel was one that may surprise you; I wanted to fight for true equality. Needless to say, the way we fought didn't solve anything other than a quick way for the people to become slaves to Dictators and the Territorial Governors.
I killed, sacrificed, and bled for my country to be free of the corrupt politicians, the controlling bureaucracy, and for all people to be given the same chance as those who are born of higher class.
Of course, none of that happened. The leaders lived in mansions, the workers lived in communal housing, and the Communist Freedom Fighters are executed so the country doesn't have a combat trained population so they can't cause trouble.
Many thoughts ran through my mind as they hooked the rope around my neck, but ultimately I found depression, loss, and more importantly betrayal.
However, I felt something deep down. I knew this was the end for me, but somehow, I knew that the true revolution was far from over.
That was the repeating thought that ran through my mind, until the floor beneath me gave out, and my neck snapped.

~ Author's Note ~

Maybe you read the entire description, or maybe you only read the title, but I will state this now: this is the end. There is no reincarnation, no magical being that brings the main character back in time to correct his wrongs, no lone watcher that jumps from the crowd to save him. The Character is dead, and there is no way to save him.
I'm not usually a Short Story Writer, nor do I use Near Future / Dystopian settings, but I wanted to write a quick story to pass my own useless time. I would love to dive into what brought the character into the grasps of communism, what pushed him, what walls he faced and how he made a family during a time of conflict, revolution, and Civil War. I would love to focus on how he truly believed in the cause despite the "necessary evils" his leaders condoned. Follow him down the path he leads, and eventually makes his own grave.
Ultimately, it's up to the viewer to decide the fut-, wait, no, Past, of this character. Thank you for your time, and this was Johnson, Signing off.
