The grass was still dewy when the duo trudged up the hill, blanket in hand. She thought this would be a cute idea forgetting how early sunrise is. They made it to a nice spot juts in time, the sun peaking up, its first rays lighting the sky and the fanned out they blanket below them. They settled not quite on the top of the hill but just low enough that the earth was naturally tilting them slightly vertically. He placed his right arm behind his head laid out his left arm, an established signal after years of sleeping beside one another to curl into his chest.
They had developed many signals over the years some spoken but many came as natural as breathing, never quite discussed juts placed into practice without a single word otherwise. Her two arms stretched up to his shoulders meant she was looking for affection typically in the form of a kiss, a light tug at the hem of a sleeve meant they were ready to leave whatever gathering they were at. Squeezing the other's hand was a sign of immense love indescribable by English words while adversely not reciprocating a squeeze signaled that you were upset and needed to talk something out. A wrist hold was for when one was uncomfortable and needed to be saved from a situation and a waist hold said that you needed a hug most commonly following a particularly hard day. Not to mention that via juts their eyes they could absolutely read one another's minds, requiring very few words if they chose not to speak. Out of them all however, the left arm was her favorite one. It meant after a long day all I want is to hold you in my arms as close to me as you can get and that is enough. It meant no matter what I will always choose you to remain by my side every night. But mostly it meant as you lay your head on my chest and hear my heartbeat know it only beats for you.
She did as she was silently told. Sliding into his side and fitting in perfectly, like a glove designed specifically for her. She felt silly, the nature of her overwhelmingly cheesy thoughts. Though they were not new they were unsettling and quite frankly nauseating to her all the same. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. She decided that early summer mornings mixed with whatever made his smell so distinctive to her was her favorite and silently prayed for it to exist in any form outside of this moment.
She brought her left arm to rest on his chest, a ball of T-shirt within it. He folded the left arm cradled around her head, his hand falling to her hair as he lightly massaged her scalp. She was almost embarrassed by how loud the involuntary sigh of contentment was she knew safe with him and it was free of judgement. She didn't need to feel any shame knowing he probably felt similar peace at this moment if not identical. She felt him laugh below her as he slid his hand down her back and tugging her further into him.
She refocused her gaze looking at the sky above them. It was still lined with some orange and pink but becoming a vibrant blue with dozens of clouds, all looking deliciously fluffy like cotton candy, not a single gray one for miles. He left a few light kisses on her forehead before he too looked up at the sky. She felt him shift below her as he shot his right arm up into their line of vision pointing out a particularly phallic shaped cloud. She pushed herself up by his chest to make eye contact. She wanted to feign disappointment but the laugh that slipped from her lips gave her away. She hid in the crook of his neck to avoid the teasing she knew was to come for humoring him at all.
Burrowing her nose as deeply as she could she left light kisses there as well in the hopes that he might just forget to make fun of her. Once she felt his right hand awkwardly attempt to cup her jaw that was tucked away by his collarbone, she slowly made an ascent up his jawline leaving a final kiss firmly on his lips. She settled back down on his chest one more satisfied with how flawlessly the distraction worked.
He pointed up again. This cloud was shaped like a turtle and moved slowly making the two laugh at the attempted to name their sky turtle. They agreed upon Donatello, letting him pass them by.
A few more distinct shapes passed as they laid there together making jokes and laughing. Their favorite thing to do was make the other laugh and it happened so effortlessly between them. She was ready to laugh at virtually anything he said regardless of how stupid it was and his nose scrunched up every time he heard the sound of her giggles. Their quips worked in tandem allowing minutes to pass like milliseconds as the patterns in the sky floated above them.
Much to their chagrin, the sun had fully risen signaling it was time to go and complete the rest of their day. She rolled on top of him, her chest on his, and she pushed herself up to his lips. Giving him one last kiss, she rolled off of him and attempted to steady herself back on her feet as she felt him stand beside her. He picked up the blanket with one hand grabbed her hand with the other and they slowly made their descent back to the car.
AN: I either absolutely love this story or I absolutely hate it and I'm not sure which one it is. I have about 7 ideas in the works and virtually 0 ways of wrapping any of them up so we'll see what happens and I shall keep you all updated.
