"It's all about the coffee, Aunt Jenna." Elena said as Buffy zombie-walked into the room.

"Is that coffee? Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee" Buffy chanted as she poured a cup for herself and raised it to her nose. She inhaled the bitter, comforting aroma that came along with the ever-amazing caffeine rush. The cup pressed against her lips for a second before it was stolen from her grasp.

"Ooh, coffee." Jeremy hummed.

Buffy groaned and looked up at her baby brother. He gave her a cocky little smirk before he sipped her cup of coffee. Buffy growled and stepped forward to attack him, but Elena held her back.

"Brat." Buffy settled for a snarky retort that, if she had any coffee in her, would be downright scary.

"Enough, you guys. Please." Jenna begged them.

Jeremy and Buffy had been hostile at best to each other all summer long. Jeremy did most of the antagonizing, and Buffy tried her best to ignore it but there was only so much one could take. Elena handed Buffy the mug of coffee she poured for herself, which made Buffy sigh in relief. At least she had Elena.

Elena and Buffy had bonded over the long summer of sorrow. For the last year and a half, their relationship stood on shaky ground. They drifted apart shortly after their 15th birthday and the start of freshman year. Of course, Buffy knew why. Elena, sadly, didn't. People drift apart—it's normal. At least that's what the brunette told herself.

Unlike last year, the Gilbert sisters would walk hand in hand into the hellmouth they called Mystic Falls High. Finally a united front.

"Your first day of school and I'm totally unprepared. Lunch money?" Jenna opened her wallet and procured 5 dollars. Buffy snatched it before Jeremy could. The younger gilbert glared at his speedy sister. She was always much faster than he was.

Elena ignored her siblings and turned to Jenna, "I'm good."

"Anything else? A number two pencil? What am I missing?"

"Don't you have a big presentation today?" Elena pointed out. She was clearly the only member of the family who had their wits about them this early in the morning. Or ever.

"I'm meeting with my thesis advisor at..."Jenna furrowed her eyebrows. There was no way she missed something that big. She glanced at her watch, "Now! Crap!"

Jenna took her hair down from her clip, and Buffy handed the woman her purse.

"Go, Jenna. We'll try not to miss you for the next few hours. If you really feel the sudden urge to help me, you could swing by the school and kill me before I walk in to Tanner's class." Buffy said as she sipped her coffee. She slowly started to come alive after a few gulps.

Jenna suppressed a smile while she ran out the door, "Have fun and make good choices!"

Once the parental figure left the house, Elena turned to Jeremy. His emo-my Chemical Romance-grunge era look only heightened her worry for him. The drug and alcohol abuse ended this year. And she would make it stop because Elena was anything if not determined. And, in Buffy's personal experience, very hard to escape.
