Arriving at SHIELD headquarters was...strange to say the least. You swore you had never been here, but could remember every face there, every turn, sign, desk, room, everything. It was so familiar, yet so mysterious.
Stepping out of the door, your every move now had to be perfect. This plan had taken weeks to put into motion and you could not mess this up.
You worsened your posture slightly and tried to appear confident- a contrast to your normal self. You had to be a whole new person for the day.
Tony walked around from his side of the car and escorted you to the entrance. The others would be arriving shortly, "concerned for the little girl Tony found on the street". Banner was already here, "working on a new weapon" in the control lab.
That was the story to stick to. You were Sabrina Anders, 14 years old, homeless. Or, at least that was your identity for the day.
You walked into the building, not even needing to act like you were terrified. That emotion was natural at this point.
Fury walked through the lobby to meet Tony, greeting him as if they were old friends, asking if you were hungry, a little, thirsty, yes, tired, very much, cold, slightly. These were pre-planned responses, made to be heard by others to let them know who you "were".
"Well, let me get you up to a lab and we can make sure you're in good health." he said, leading you to the elevators.
You held up the act until reaching the lab, Tony knocked out the monitoring system and replaced it with one from a similar empty lab.
"Alright, I need to get back down before people start asking for me, try to make it quiet and snappy." Fury said as he left.
You took in a deep breath, removing the layer of old worn down clothes to reveal one of your suits from Tony.
Banner looked up from his computer to finally address you, "The others'll be here soon, but we should probably-"
"Get this over with." You interjected.
"Right. So just step in there and let's get to work."
You did as you were told and looked to Tony in uncertainty.
"You've got it, chick."
Nodding in response, you looked to Banner and tried to settle your shaking hands.
"So, we have Barnes' hydra file and book, I'm gonna try his words, but there's another page of unrelated ones that I can try after if that doesn't work."
You looked to the floor, trying to find a tangible thing to focus on before you switched.
"Uh, alright..."Bruce began into the mic "Longing...Rusted...seventeen..daybreak....furnace..."
A sharp stabbing pain began at the back of your head, some deep level of memory made its way to the surface, "Wait!" you yelled.
Bruce and Tony both looked to you in anticipation and confusion.
"It's not these...does the other page start with Candidate?"
Tony rushed to the book and scanned a few pages, "Yeah, ring a bell?"
"Mhmm." You nodded, screwing your eyes shut.
The other avengers crept in as quietly as possible, waiting for something to happen.
"Take two..." Bruce laughed nervously. You looked to Bucky who was cracking his knuckles- a nervous habit of his. He did a thumbs up and cheesy smile as soon as you made eye contact.
"Candidate, needle, lace..."
A ringing in your ears began and you doubled over, whimpering and groaning in pain. Your hands rushed to your head to try an ease the pain, but it was deemed useless.
"Precision, hostage, anguish..."
The sound became deafeningly louder, nearly drowning out the noise from Bucky and Natasha yelling for Bruce to stop, which you hissed back, "Keep-aah...Keep going."
"Glimmer, oblivion-"
And right then and there, the ringing hushed and the room stopped spinning.
