My eyes opened to a glaring sun and the smell of something delicious. I pulled on the lock, but it didn't open.

"Trying to get out huh," Newt scoffs. God was his morning voice perfect.

"You gonna help me or nah buddy boy."

"Buddy boy, huh, that's a new one." He chuckled under his breath as he fiddled with the lock and finally got it open.

"Alright Greenie time for your tour."

"Can we please stop this whole Greenie thing, we know my name. It's Saige."

"Oh don't worry, I know. It's just fun playing with you." I rolled my eyes. I hit him on the side in a playful manner, hoping he would understand my joke. We walked to the "kitchen" which was basically a bar in the middle of the forest. It seemed to work though.

"What ya cookin up today Fry?" Newt asked.

"Pancakes for the Greenie, I'm Frypan by the way." He held out his hand and I reached over the bar to shake it. Man was tall, like really tall. I shook his hand and we both giggled.

"You," I said, still holding onto his hand, "are my new best friend."

"Got it Greenie, or Saige should I dare to say," He winked at me and I let out a whole hearted laugh. I walked back to Newt and sat right next to him. Newt turned away and I saw Frypan lift his eyebrows at me. He looked at Newt, then back at me. I sarcastically rolled my eyes and waltzed my way back up to him.

"Your plate princess," Fry pushed out a plate towards me, "Eat up, must be hungry after staying a night in the Slammer."

"Thank you," I smiled. Newt and I ate in silence until Alby came up.

"Newt, by any chance do you think you can take Saige on her tour today. I have some stuff that I need to deal with. Let's just say some Gladers got in a bit of a fight last night." He turned his tone down at the last bit.

"Sure, but do you mind telling Zart, I don't want him to think I'm skipping again."

"Of course." Alby turns away and jogs back to where he came from.

"Alright Saige let's go on your tour." He reaches out his hand to help me up but I push it aside. "Ok then," he mutters. "Even though I did tell you a bit last night I'll just repeat some of the rules. Rule number one: Everyone does their part, I'll explain to you the jobs later. Rule number two: never hurt another Glader, or you will have to pay consequences. Rule number 3: never, ever, go beyond those walls." He points towards the maze. "Considering you already have spent a night in the Slammer you know the consequences, but next time we won't go as easy on you."

"Got it," I replied. I really don't know why he was so concerned about the Maze, I did my venture and it wasn't that bad. I did trust Newt though, so I decided not to worry. He showed me the places in the Glade and explained all the uses. The Deadheads, Homestead, Slammer, Blood House, and the Gardens.

"Soon you will start your job trial." Newt said, "There are builders, cooks, slicers, med-jacks, track-hoe's, sloppers, and runners. You will try all of these until you find the job you are good at and the job you like."

"Alright, so when do I start!" I say.

"Tomorrow you will start as a slopper in the morning then go to try being a cook after lunch."

"Y'know Newt. I'm not really keen on the whole murdering animals thing."

"Sorry Saige, you gotta try it. Everyone does and there will be no exceptions." As he said this he tapped my nose and laughed. I blushed slightly as he turned and walked away towards the Homestead. As he left I noticed that he limped when he walked. Not a slight one, but an aggressive limp. Either way I carried on.

"Hey Fry."

"Hey princess! I got you," he reached his hand under the bar counter, "a piece of chocolate."

"Thanks Fry," I say grabbing the chocolate.

"So, have your eye on anyone?" he asks, as I sit on one of the barstools.

"Not necessarily..." I whispered looking back at the Homestead where Newt traveled too.

"Oh Saige, you act like I haven't noticed the way you and Newt look at eachother."

"What-," I stuttered, "No no no no no, no way." I knew once I said this that it was my fate because I immediately felt my cheeks go pink.

"Come on Saige, admit it. You," he points his finger right at me, "have a crush, on the second in command."

"I give up, ok. I guess I do like him," I look back over at the Homestead and see many boys coming over for lunch. I smile as I see the limping boy start making his way over.

"See, look at that," Fry knocks me out of my day dream as he says this, "You gotta crush, you gotta crush."

"Shut up Fry, I don't want anyone to know," I said. Fry handed me my meal and I made my way to an empty table, now knowing that I have one complete friend I can trust.
