Eva POV-

Blackness.

That's all I saw. Thick, wet, darkness. It felt like I was drowning. Falling down a tunnel of nothing. The voices of a million people came crashing down at the same time.

I loved him.

Slice of cake...

My name's Karina.

Hey, you're kinda hot.

Lights out, sweetheart.

My eyes shot open, sweat trickling down my brow. I looked around the pale room. Adjusting to the dim lighting was easy, accepting the reality of my situation was not.

I was in a dark sort of room, with a low ceiling and a dusty lamp in the corner. There was a large wooden door across the room from me, and the air smelled like smoke and dust bunnies. I wrinkled my nose.

My hands were tied behind me with some sort of zip lock rope, and a pole protruded from the ceiling and into the ground, right through the hole that was my arms. I was stuck.

I tried pulling my hands away from each other, but that just tightened the rope, cutting into my skin. I groaned from the pain.

"Look, Christian, she's awake." My head shot to the corner of the room, where Karina sat beside the door, sharpening a knife. I noticed the room was warm and smirked at a thought.

"Don't stand too close to the heater, Karina, plastic melts." She whipped her head at me and narrowed her eyes dangerously. I simply grinned at her. But I took it back when I found myself pinned against the pole at an odd angle, Karina's hard breathing on my face. Her knife pressed against my throat threateningly, and I gulped.

"Let this be a lesson to you, Eva. From now on you keep quiet, you take what you get, and you take it without complain." She spat on my face before letting me go and calling out an open window.

"All right, y'all, she's awake, you can come in now!" Who else?

I answered my question when about a dozen people barged in through the door excitedly, surrounding me and staring like I was a zoo animal.

"She's kinda sexy." I heard a boy say on my right. I looked him up and down before spitting on his ragged shoes. The crowd chuckled and wooed him, and he blushed and stepped back into the crowd. I sat back, proud of myself.

"She's a feisty one, I see!" Another man shouted.

"And she's all ours." My head whipped to the voice, landing upon a girl with frizzy brown hair and a piercing white smile.

"Just kidding, girl, you are you're own person!" She explained, bursting out laughing. I had to at least crack a grin. Most of the room had giggled and laugh too, for hers was contagious.

"My name's Devvy, but you can call me Dev, and you sure had an unlucky day!"

I didn't think luck had anything to do with it, I thought.

She kneeled in front of me and stuck out a hand, before giggling and drawing it back after noticing I couldn't return it.

"Sorry, I forgot!" I nodded and introduced myself to the girl.

"My name's Eva. Eva Cudmore." I heard gasps from around the room, and Karina spoke up.

"Yes, yes, she's a Cudmore." There was silence again before the room erupted in whispers.

"But didn't she say she wanted someone with less money?" She? Who was she? Karina turned her head lazily to the boy who had spoken. The same one who called me sexy. I rolled my eyes, gaining a snicker from Devvy. I smiled thoughtfully. Why was she so nice?
