I Once Met a Mermaid

I once met a mermaid, down by the sea,

The waves crashed the shore like the beat of a drum I strolled by the shore at dusk. I was as alone as could be.

Not a soul was around, not a soul did see as something in the horizon came swimming towards me.

At first, I felt frightened and I started to move away but then thought hey, whatever is in the water can't get me anyway.

Oh, how wrong I had been! I continued to stare, the moonlight casting a spell on the scene while I watched her approach. What I didn't know then was that I would be soaked.

When the woman was close enough she burst out of the water, which covered me like a blanket.

She laughed and laughed like the ring of a bell, and I was sure that she found this all quite swell. It took me a moment to process just what I was seeing, a little woman swaying and swimming in the drink.

I laughed in surprise and I shook myself off, taking my eyes off of her for just a moment, and when I looked her way again, she was there no more.
