Are You Insane? Chapter Five: Is This Reality?

I woke up the next day with a killer headache. The clock on my nightstand read 11:00 a.m. My eyes glued themselves shut and I braced myself for the onslaught of dark shadows and painful delusions. I waited and waited but nothing came. I opened my eyes and there was nothing. I slowly crept out of bed and walked to the door. I timidly turned the doorknob and peeked into the hallway. Nothing. There was nothing there. I turned around and walked to the center of the room. Marie was still fast asleep snoring lightly dressed in the same outfit as last night. She looked different. Something seemed off. As I was standing next to her bed I took a closer look. Her face. It was mutilated. Her mouth was stitched closed and eyelids had been removed, the icy blue eyes looking directly at me. I heard a deranged giggle by my side. When I turned to the right I saw no one standing there. I spun around in a circle and could find no one. I looked back to Marie and sitting on the edge of her bed, with Marie’s head in her lap, stroking her hair was a little girl no older than eight years old. She looked admiringly at Marie before lifting her head and beaming.

“She was so pretty. Its unfortunate she had to leave so early. She wouldn’t play with me. I kept trying to talk to her but she started taking these little red pills. She was never the same after them. We used to talk all the time. But she’s gone now. Oh well. You get to be my new friend isn’t that great?” she said as she bounced lightly up and down. Her curly black hair that framed her sallow face bouncing with her in sync. She jumped up and grabbed my hand.

“Will you come with me? Please?” she asked brown eyes wide similar to a puppy. She looked so sad I couldn’t refuse so against my better judgment I took her hand and followed her down the hallway and out through the kitchen doors. We walked hand in hand through the grounds of the asylum until we reached the edge of the forest that surrounded it. After a few minutes of walking down a beaten path we came to a small bridge. She led me to the middle where we stood leaning against the rail. I didn’t notice anything suspicious until she let go of my hand and walked to the other side of the bridge. Not really knowing what to do I followed. She led me down the hill to the small brook that ran under the bridge. There we stood. The sun was reaching its peak when she pointed to a spot in the stream a few yards from where we were standing. Slowly my eyes followed her finger to the spot she was pointing to. In the stream caught on a rock was a body. It was face down in the water but I knew who it was. The black hair and the turquoise sequined top were two factors that gave the corpses identity away. I slowly made my way around the edge of the brook and searched for a sturdy branch. When I found one that wouldn’t break with a little pressure I carefully moved the floating hair away from the face. Despite the murky water my assumptions were proved correct. For some reason I was indifferent to the situation. I stepped carefully into the water and sat down on the edge. I pulled Brie’s waterlogged body onto my lap and carefully stroked her hair. The little girl sat next to me and held Brie’s hand.

“Jonathon didn’t like her. He’s my older brother. He said that she was taking me away from him. He hurt her. But it’s okay. She deserved to die he said. She was a bad person. She hurt him. And he hurt her. It’s only fair right?” she questioned. I turned to look at her. She was looking up at me with those cloudy eyes and for a split second I saw a flash of anger.

“Yes. Your brother was completely right. Bad people need to be disposed of. Brie was bad. She deserved to die.” My eyes glazed over and I was no longer seeing the stream nor sitting on the cold wet ground. Instead I was sitting in Dr. D’s office.

“Nicole… Nicole are you with me?” he questioned in a panicky voice. I turned my head to the said and gave him a cold smile.

“Yes Sir. I’m still here and I’m perfectly fine.” I answered.

“Nicole who is Jonathon and Cinda?” he asked me with narrowed eyes.

“They’re my friends.” I answered in a cheerful voice.

“When did you meet them?” he questioned while setting his glasses down and straightening out. I wasn’t seeing his face anymore. I was seeing a boy around my age, with pale skin and sunken black eyes standing behind him. His hair was straight and reached his chin. It was clumped slightly and greasy. In one of his gnarled hands he held a sharp cleaver. In the other was a black tattered kerchief. I glanced back at the doctor and gave him a cold smile. In one swift motion the boy had covered the mans face with the cloth and slit his throat. His head landed on his desk and began to form a pool of crimson. My smile widened as I realized what had happened. Sitting in front of me in a pool of his own blood was the man who I loathed. The foundation of my problems. And he was gone. I turned my smile towards the boy. However he was no longer a boy. He was a shapeless shadow draped in wispy black and gray cloth. I didn’t have time to register anything before he came after me.
