Aurora looked back towards the corner wall that connected the living room and kitchen. Her uncle's safe by his bookshelf. It was tall like the shelf and dark grey color. A combination lock protecting the weapons from the wrong hands.
The girl glanced back at the door before she faced the safe and slowly made her way to it. She was sure her uncle had changed the passcode after she took the first gun out of the safe last time she visited him. It had been a week after her father's death.
Her uncle committed to himself to take care of her as he had that week off of work. She remembered clearly the man had gone to the grocery when she felt uneasy and terrified of someone getting in. The young girl had taken out a Smith & Wesson 686 revolver.
She had taken it simply because it was the only gun her father taught her to use as he had gotten one exactly like her uncle's for his twenty-fifth birthday. She hated that it didn't have enough ammo.
She had indeed fired it before, she ran out of bullets and couldn't get anymore since she wasn't twenty-one. Now after searching and searching all about the best-handled guns she found one she could easily handle. One her uncle must have in his safe. So here she was, making her way to the safe.
There was a knock at the door, startling the little girl and making her jump in surprise. She held in her breath, trying to calm her heart down as she glanced out the window that still had no curtains.
They knocked one more time, Aurora slowly walking towards the front window to get a better view. "Who is it?"
"It's your neighbor!" The woman announced cheerfully. She recognized that voice, it was the woman who had shouted earlier that morning. Aurora frowned in confusion as she ever so slowly looked through the small peephole and taking a look at the normal-looking woman.
She unlocked the door hesitantly. Her hands shaking as she did. Aurora unlocked the doorknob and slowly pulled it, a small creak where she poked her head out through. "Hello. Can I help you?"
"I just wanted to welcome you guys to the neighborhood. I'm May Parker. I live right over here." She pointed to the home to Aurora's left. The girl didn't budge in opening the door any wider nor taking her eyes off of the Parker woman. "N- nice to meet you, Ms. Parker."
"May is fine sweety." She reassured the timid girl of such politeness.
"Right." Aurora nodded but didn't correct herself.
"I wanted to bring this before your father left to not look like a creepy old lady but I noticed a car is gone from the driveway so I assume he left." May frowned a bit, seeing how Aurora didn't budge to widen the creek of the door. "He's not my father. He's my uncle." She was quick to correct her
"I apologize. Your uncle." She gave her an understanding nod. "It's lasagna." She motioned to the dish in her hands.
"Oh. We're fine Ms. Parker."
"I insist. My nephew helped me. He's a very good cook." She reassured the girl once more. The raven girl didn't want to let her guard down, she had no clue if the lasagna had any sleep drug or poison.
Though the more she glanced at the plate and back up at the grown woman she was coming to mind that Ms. Parker wasn't planning on leaving till she gave the girl the food. "I don't- I don't think my uncle likes lasagna." She tried to make her leave.
"Really? Oh." The woman felt quite upset. Aurora couldn't help but feel bad. She hated sadness, as her life was full of it, she hated when other people felt it. "But I do." She reached her hands out for the plate of food.
"Oh, that's great! Here!" She cheered once more, handing Aurora the plate. "Yes. Yes. I'm sorry to cut this short but I'm in a hurry." She apologized to May, who nodded understandably and didn't wait for another second to say her goodbyes. "Alrighty then, if you two ever need anything please just let me or my nephew know."
"Of course. Goodbye." Aurora was quick to close the door, completely terrified from top to bottom. How could she go to school if she couldn't even talk to an innocent lady?
She set the dish down on the kitchen table and went over to her bag, the gun safe by now over her head with her worrying and nervousness. How she wished school shootings weren't a thing for her to take her gun. Clearly, she knew her mind wasn't right. Accidents happen. Even if she could take it, she was even more terrified if she did something stupid.
She wiggled her hands, walking back and forth and putting her satchel over her head, she held tight to the strap against her chest.
"It's okay. It's okay." She whispered, putting her shoes on. She glanced at the lasagna dish and out the door as she lightly snapped the rubber band on her left wrist, making her hum lightly at the unpleasant feeling. A technic taught to her by her boyfriend the first day they meet.
She was new and was supposed to do a lab report that same day, no exceptions. "You better start breathing before you turn blue and pass out." She remembered his voice. Cocky yet humble.
'Breathe' she thought to herself. Somehow even as a memory, his voice was quite soothing to her. 'In. Out. In. Out' she focused and kept snapping her rubber band, a bit slower than before.
"Are you okay hun? You look like you're on Mars or something." May chuckled as she glanced at her nephew, mentally seeming to be anywhere but here.
"Are you even awake?" She muttered to the boy as he looked out the window of the kitchen, his lazy body sitting unprofessionally. "What?" He sat up quickly, looking over to his aunt.
"Oh poor child, did you even have time to rest?" She glanced at his dark circles. The boy rubbed his eyes, frowning in confusion as he nodded. "W- yes. I did Aunt May. W-" he laughed nervously.
"D- did they like the lasagna?" He pointed to the next-door neighbors, acting as if he hadn't been listening to the young girl snap her rubber band repeatedly.
"Well, the girl said her uncle doesn't like it. Apparently, she does though. Hopefully, she does. She's very shy. But I guess being in this neighborhood you have to take precautions." She shrugged lightly.
"Right." The boy nodded with her. "So you said her uncle?"
"Yeah. That's what she said. But I swear when I caught a glance of him they looked just alike... who knows." She hummed.
"Yup." He popped the 'p' at the end, standing up from the chair and putting his dark blue backpack straps over his arms. It was quite amusing how long the bag has lasted with him. "Anyways, I have to go. See you in a bit." He kissed her cheek quickly as he headed out with his skateboard in hand.
He waited till he was out, off the small porch and onto the sidewalk. He slowed down, glancing at the new neighbors before setting his skateboard down and skating off around the corner into the huddle of citizens where he stopped and started walking towards his destination.
. . .
Yes. I know. I bit of a cringe. I didn't really feel quite well about this until I added the nephew part. They may meet soon or not. Not sure but this is a Peter Parker story so I need you to give you all something.
Till next time ~A.O.
