The Next Day

After Frank, Jasmine, Diana, Aaron, and Zach left my family soon followed them. I was alone once again.

I sighed to myself as I checked the clock. It was almost nine at night, and I wanted to watch Tv, it was a good thing that the remote was right next to my bed. I grabbed it and switched on the Tv. I flipped through the channels and the only thing that the hospital would allow was cartoons and soap operas.

I settled with watching a soap opera. Two of the characters were gay guys fighting for marriage equality. I somehow found comfort in watching this. I liked the fact that they were standing their ground for what was right.

After about two hours I fell asleep. I was somewhat comfortable in the bed, besides the fact that I would shift my position every forty minutes while I slept.

When I woke up the next day the nurse that was with me last night gave a smile and said that my parents were on their way to come pick me up.

It wasn't too long after that when my parents and Mykia came to pick me up. Mom stopped by the front desk and the guy behind it gave mom a few papers to sign. After that I was discharged from the hospital.

It was only eight in the morning. School started in thirty minutes. My parents were going to drop Mykia at school and take me home, but I insisted that I go to school too.

We drove to the school and got out. I noticed that my car wasn't here anymore which meant my parents picked it up. I took a deep breath in and walked into school with no fear, although I could see Mykia making constants glances at me trying to make sure I was okay.

I left my sister and walked to my first period class which was Algebra 2. When I walked in I could see my teacher, Mrs Hensley, give me a sympathetic smile.

I smiled back at her, but I didn't want sympathy. I wanted help. The good thing about the teachers here is that they didn't judge me for being gay.

I took my seat that's all the way in the back, away from everyone. The good thing about not having friends was that I didn't have any distractions. I mean, friends would be nice and all but it's whatever.

During the whole class period I heard whispers about how I got my ass kicked by Pete. On occasions I would hear giggles and laughter.

I took a deep breath in and tried to remember what Jasmine had said to me before she left. "No matter how things may look now, no matter how rough everything seems to be, remember that you are loved." I liked Jasmine, she was really nice and sweet to me. I hoped to see more of her in my future.

The bell rung and I gathered my stuff and headed to my next period class. On the way I heard people being their usual asshole selves.

"Hey Daniel! Liked that ass kicking by Pete?" One kid called.

"Not the kind of ass pounding you was expecting, huh Daniel?" Another kid yelled.

I put my earphones in and blasted Slaves in my ear. I walked to my next class. I had English with Mrs. Hollingsworth. But when I walked into my class I saw a tall black guy with muscles as big a my head. He was dressed in business attire, which meant he must've been a substitute teacher. He looked to be about a couple years older than me, like he was in his mid-twenties.

He looked up from his papers and flashed me a smile. I smiled back and took my usual seat in the back, which was next to the teacher's desk.

When class began he stood up and walked into the front of the class. "Hello class. If you hadn't heard by now Mrs. Hollingsworth has had a personal family emergency that requires her full attention. She's quit her teaching job and moved to Ohio so she can deal with her emergency. I am her replacement. I am Mr. Baldwin" he introduce himself to the class.

Great, a new teacher. I liked Mrs. Hollingsworth because she actually cared to help me deal with the people in the school, now she's gone. I felt like I wanted to cry, but I couldn't.

He called attendance, whenever a called out a girl's name that girl would call out 'Here!' Over-excitedly and very flirtatious.

"Daniel Smith." he called.

I was going to say 'here' but someone said something before me. "The fag's back there!" Jordan Mason called out.

"Get out." Mr. Baldwin said, with a hint of fury in his voice.

Jordan looked surprised by that. But gathered his stuff and left the room silently. "I will not tolerate bullying in my classroom. If anyone has anything else to say and leave my classroom now." Mr. Baldwin said.

The class didn't say anything else for the rest of the period. I actually think I might like this teacher. He just stood up for me. Not many people would do that for a faggot
