Y/N woke up in somebody else's bed. Again.  She rolled over to see a man she didn't remember at all. She knew he was probably twice her age, but she didn't give a damn. She and her brother needed the money. All they had was an empty apartment in the big city.

Her head ached as she sat upright. The bed smelled of whiskey and cigarettes, but she was used to it. Y/N leaned over and picked up the lacy bra that was on the floor. She sighed as she clasped the back and put on her red tank top. When she stood she felt a rush of dizziness. Her brother always got mad at her for drinking. He knew that there already was one person in the house who was an alcoholic. They couldn't afford them both being addicted. However, she didn't want to remember all the things she does just to support them.

When Y/N arrived at the apartment she first glanced at her brother Benny. He was fast asleep on the pillows on the floor that they called a couch. There was a bottle still in his hand. She let out a sigh. Benny was a gifted chess player, everybody knew this. However ever since his huge breakup, he has been having trouble finding competitions. That was the whole reason Y/N moved into his apartment in NYC. She needed to help support the only family she had left. She needed to help her brother just like she should have twelve years ago.

Benny opened his eyes and saw Y/N at the stove with a pan in her hand. He sniffed the air and he knew what she was cooking. "Eggs. Again?" Benny groaned. "It's the only food in our fridge. Maybe if you didn't lay around all day we could eat something different for a change." She knew that Benny was trying to find work, but when he couldn't find one he just gave up. She was done babying him. He needed to get a job. She couldn't support them forever.

Y/N put the eggs on a plate and handed it to her brother. "Move over, you're taking up the entire couch." She gruffed at him. She looked around at their pathetic home and longed for more. The "couch" was the only thing in the living room other than a few small bookcases and pictures hanging on the walls. "You know I'm not mad at you right? I just need help. I can't do this all on my own. We barely have enough money for rent, let alone food. I just.. could use some help that's all." Y/N looked into her brother's chocolate eyes. He looked at her sympathizing. "I know. I will find a job. I will. I promise you." Benny put his head on his sister's shoulder and fell asleep. She knew that he wasn't going to find a job. He was too depressed and unmotivated. She looked at him sorrowfully and sighed. She gently put his head on the pillow and went to the front door. She knew who she needed to call. She knew who would make him okay again.

Y/N heard the stories about the chess prodigy who stole her brother's heart. She didn't know much else about her. However, she did know that Beth Harmon must have been one hell of a girl to be able to have this impact on Benny. He isn't very open about his feelings. He is a hard person to love. She figured that Beth was the same way.

Y/N opened the door and walked into her brother's room. There wasn't much in there either. She glanced to the bedside table next to his bed. There must have been at least 500 letters on it. When she picked the first one up she noticed that it wasn't a letter to Benny, but a letter written by Benny. She figured he must have written all these letters and just never sent them for some reason. She saw the name and a grin came on her face. "Perfect." She mumbled to herself. She grabbed the envelope and ran through the kitchen to the front door. Before she opened it to leave she wrote down something on a napkin and left some cash. She put it on the table and left the apartment. She was going to fix everything.

The train station was full of people. Y/N pushed past them with her ticket in her hand. She was determined to get to Kentucky. She found the train and handed the conductor her ticket. He handed it back with a hole in the corner. "Thank you," Y/N says as she stepped onto the train. She knew it was going to be a long ride so she got comfortable in the seat and closed her eyes. After multiple stops and switching trains, she finally arrived in Lexington, Kentucky.

The cab stopped right in front of 4400 Reed Lane. Beth Harmon's house. Y/N walked to the front door. As she walked she noticed the overflowing mail in the mailbox from months ago. Then the empty bottles by the road. She sighed. She realized this might have been a huge mistake and that she should just turn around. Just as she was about to leave she heard a large crash inside and saw a silhouette through the window walking to the front door. The doorknob twisted and a beautiful girl, no not girl, woman. A beautiful woman was standing there. Their eyes met and she noticed the vibrant dark circles under her eyes. Yet she was still the most gorgeous woman Y/N has ever laid her eyes on. Beth tensed and asked, "Can I help you with something?".
