My mom’s car pulled to a stop in front of Little Creek. I jumped out and waved to my mom as she drove off. Today was Sunday, so it was my last day of work for the weekend. I didn’t work on weekdays because of school and homework. I began walking towards the pasture to see which horses were out. I didn’t have to work right this second so I see no reason as to why I wouldn’t be able to look at them. Only eight horses were currently here at Little Creek, and three of them were out in the pasture right now. Hershey was one of the three horses outside. I let out a soft whistle and all of the horses lifted their heads and looked at me. There was an Appaloosa and an Arabian along with Hershey. Hershey took off running to the part of the pasture that was farthest from me. I sighed and started heading towards the barn to take care of my chores.

I grabbed the wheel barrow and shovel that were in front of the barn, meaning that Jake had already mucked out his half of the stalls. There wasn’t much manure since we had just mucked yesterday, so I was only doing that chore for about an hour. I put the wheel barrow and the shovel back into the tool shed before heading into the tack room. I grabbed the empty buckets I used yesterday and walked to the front of the barn. I filled the buckets with water and began making my trips as I put water into the water buckets in the stalls. Once I was done, I began putting horse food into the food buckets in the stalls. Once I was done, I sat down and leaned against the stall doors. No matter how many times I did these chores, my arms were always sore afterwards.

Once my arms didn’t feel like they were about to fall off, I began putting fresh hay into my half of the stalls. I pulled out my phone and looked at the time. It was one thirty in the afternoon. My stomach growled, so I walked up to Mr. and Mrs. Davis’s house. The front door was wide open so I just walked inside and into the kitchen. The tile floors were gleaming as if they had been freshly cleaned. There were marble countertops and cabinets that were made painted white. The walls themselves were tinted green. Mrs. Davis was making some brownies as a snack later for the riders and stable hands. I grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl that rested on the counter. “Hello Kate. How’s work?” Mrs. Davis asked as I took a bite of my apple.

“Good. I finished for the day and my mom won’t pick me up for a few hours. She had to go shopping.” I said once I had swallowed. Mrs. Davis took a pan of brownies out of the oven and put in a new pan of unbaked brownies.

“So we pay you, even though we babysit you?” Mrs. Davis teased. I crossed my arms and pretended to pout, although I ended up laughing. Mrs. Davis walked over so she stood beside me.

“I’m almost sixteen! You’re not babysitting me! Plus, you pay me for doing chores in the barn!” I defended myself. Mrs. Davis laughed and I smiled before taking another bite of my apple.

I rolled my eyes and turned towards the kitchen doorway as I heard footsteps. Mr. Davis walked in and took one of the warm brownies from the pan. I laughed as Mrs. Davis glared at him. He turned and looked at us. “You finished your chores quicker than usual, Kate.” He said as he looked at me.

“Yes I did!” I grinned. I contained myself from laughing as Mr. Davis just casually talked even though his wife glared at him for stealing one of the brownies. I finished my apple then waved goodbye to the owners of Little Creek Stables before walking over to the pasture again. Two more horses had been put into the pasture, including Storm. I whistled and the black Hanoverian lifted his head and trotted over. “Hi there Storm!” I smiled and rubbed my hand along the blaze on his head. He whinnied and nudged me with his nose. I laughed and noticed that Hershey had rejoined the other horses again. “I guess he doesn’t have a problem with other horses.” I thought out loud.

“Are you talking about that new horse?” Jake asked as he walked over beside me. I nodded, not even glancing at him. I didn’t even have to look at him to know who he was.

“Yeah, Mr. Davis said he was abused. I wish I could get close to him.” I said. Storm sniffed at Jake before trotting away to join the other horses and graze.

“I heard about that. Nobody has been able to get him out of the pasture in order to get him in the stable.” Jake said as he climbed onto the wooden fence and sat. I rolled my eyes at him.

“Well, hopefully he learns to trust us all soon.” I said. Jake looked down at me and smiled before turning back towards the horses in the pasture.

“Kate! Look at that!” Jake said suddenly. I looked to where his finger was pointing and saw Storm rearing up in the air, striking his legs out towards Hershey. My eyes widened as Hershey took off running in the direction of a fallen tree. The tree fell down last week in a pretty bad storm. Hershey just kept running, getting closer and closer towards the tree. At the perfect time, he leaped into the air and soared over the tree as if it was nothing. He landed perfectly and slowed to a trot. “I guess Storm isn’t a big fan of the new guy.” Jake said.

“Forget about Storm! Did you see that jump?! Hershey just flew over it like it wasn’t even there!” I exclaimed, still shocked. Hershey went back to grazing, a lot calmer now that Storm wasn’t threatening him. Jake just laughed at my amazement and surprise, causing me to glare at him.
