**Copied from my original book. Jax goes to visit Sasuke after a particularly rough day of experiments, and Sasuke can't take it anymore. CW: Angst, death, crying.
Do you like Dana Taylor? I don't. Drop whatever mean things you have to say about her in the comments.**
There was a knock on the door to the hospital room. "No visitors right now, please," immediately answered the cold voice of Sasuke Tanaka. The young man had been subjected to another one of Dana Taylor's experiments. Straps similar to those that check blood pressure restrained him to the bed. They were accompanied by several sensors attached to his face, along with the wires to the technology that kept his body alive. All of these systems were connected to an elaborate set of computers measuring Sasuke's brain activity, heart rate, and more things that Sasuke couldn't identify.
"Not even me?" inquired a cool voice. The door was pushed open and a young girl poked her head in, her blue-tipped hair swept up into a messy bun.
Sasuke's stubborn expression melted into a warm smile. "Jax," he said affectionately, his impulse being to go to her. But when he tried to move, the wires held him back. He grunted with disapproval as his movement nearly caused the sensors to fall from his skin.
"Hold on, I'm coming over," Jax said with a grin, walking over. "Hi, you," she murmured, kissing Sasuke's forehead.
"Hi," he answered. While staying in the laboratory where he was being tested on, Sasuke met - and fell in love with - Dana Taylor's daughter when they were both young. Granted, they were still young - merely teenagers - but when they met, neither of them were older than ten.
"You don't look so good," Jax commented, claiming a seat on the edge of the hospital bed. "What'd they do to you this time?"
Sasuke's smile faded. "Just more injections," he sighed. And Jax was right, he was pale and had shadows under his eyes. Well...more so than usual.
Jax smiled sympathetically. She grasped his hand, running her thumb over his knuckles. Her gray eyes swept across his face. "I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I just wish I didn't have to do this...no progress is being made, I'm trapped here, and you have to keep coming here if we wanna see each other-"
"It's worth it," she said softly, still holding his hand.
He sighed and shut his eyes. "Why do things have to be this way, Jax?" he asked, barely audible.
"I don't know, sweetheart," she said softly, looking at their clasped hands. "But if I know one thing, it's that your illness never defined you. This-" she looked around at the wires and computers, "doesn't define or control you."
"If it doesn't, then why have I been trapped here in this prison for as long as I can remember?" his eyes opened, looking at the ceiling. "Why hasn't Hideo, or Mom, or Dad come to get me? Why does she-" his voice caught in his throat. He blinked. "Why does she never let me leave? What's wrong with me?"
"Nothing's wrong with you, Sasuke."
"You can't prove that, Jax," he said, anger and bitterness imminent in the way he spoke. He took in a shaky breath, not looking at her. "I just want things to be easy - and I understand that that's basically what everyone wants. But nobody knows how easy they already have it. I don't want to be here right now. I don't want to be tested on like a lab rat every day, I'm tired of it. They never should have tried to save me from my illness. They should have just let me-" He cut himself off there, his eyes drifting down to their hands as another shuddery breath left him.
"We shouldn't be thinking like that," Jax responded calmly, shaking her head.
"Jax," he sighed. "We shouldn't do a lot of things. A lot of things shouldn't happen to us. We could go around with the shoulds and shouldn'ts all day. None of that is going to fix any of it. It's meaningless at this point. None of it matters. None of it could prevent this bullshit."
Jax sighed. She reached to brush away a fallen tear that Sasuke hadn't noticed he'd let escape. "I love you, Sasuke," she whispered softly, meeting his eyes.
His scared, wet eyes met hers. "I love you too, Jax," he trembled. "More than anything."
A moment took place between the two of them. Just a comfortable silence, but it wasn't comfortable. It was a realization for Sasuke.
"We can leave here together," he said suddenly.
"What?"
"Everything would be okay if it was just us. That's all that I want." He looked down, his eyes scanning the bonds that were wrapped around his arms. "We need to get out of here."
"Sasuke, you know that can't happen. You'd die," Jax said in fear.
Sasuke's eyes met hers for a second. During his meaningful glance, he said:
"You're worth it."
Jax's eyes were wide with fear. She shook her head. "You're not thinking clearly. You need to-"
"I don't need anything, Jax!" he snapped, fresh tears falling. "All I need...is to be out of here. And to be with you. That's all I want," he said, his voice shaking. His eyes found his bonds again, and for a moment he looked like the scared young boy that had entered the facility all those years ago.
He squared his jaw, anger flashing through his eyes. His hands found the bonds. He tugged and teared at them until they finally ripped, freeing his arms. He sobbed, tugging the sensors from his face. And finally, the wires that kept his heart beating.
Jax was frozen in fear, having backed away as she watched all of this happen, tears running down her cheeks.
Sasuke looked down at his shaking hands. He was finally free. Finally, after the years of suffering and pain.
He shakily brought his legs over to the side of the bed, standing up. His eyes shone.
"Sasuke..." Jax whimpered, watching him with fear. "Don't."
"I'm free," he whispered, his face forming a smile as he looked back at Jax. "I did it."
He suddenly stumbled, gasping. he set a hand on the bed to stabilize himself. Jax unfroze, hurrying to his side. "What's wrong?" she asked quickly, searching his eyes.
But Sasuke couldn't form words. The pain he felt was unlike anything that he'd put up with in his tests. It seemed to cut clear into his soul, wrenching at his emotions and crushing him to pieces from the inside out. "I-I'm sorry, he whispered, trembling. He crumbled onto the hospital bed, his breathing ragged.
Jax quickly turned to the computers, desperately fumbling with the cords that now hung loose, thinking she could get them attached to Sasuke again.
She felt a hand cupping her face, turning her head to see Sasuke. he was shaking his head. "D-don't," he rasped. "I-I can't anymore...th-this was going to happen anyway..."
Jax sobbed softly. She looked at him sadly.
Knowing that he was running out of time, Sasuke closed the gap between them and pressed their lips together. The moment lingered, a bittersweet, heart-wrenching moment that confirmed the end of this couple's time together in this life.
Jax pulled away, her arms wrapped around Sasuke. She didn't know how much she could still do to save him. She watched as his eyes turned blank. She released him, laying him down carefully. She sobbed, unable to bare the sight of his body. He was gone. Sasuke, her love, was gone.
