Copied from my original book. Evelyn Deavor has talked her way into Dana Taylor's posse, and it's up to Jax to protect the number one test subject. TW: physical fighting, broken bones (not explicit), mind control

Jax looked on in horror as Evelyn approached a struggling, restrained Sasuke. Whatever had led up to that situation was a blur. Her weapons were gone. She felt weak. She couldn't fight even if she needed to. All she knew was that her boyfriend's life was in the hands of the evil genius that had caused so much destruction and so many casualties. The woman that believed that good forces did not truly exist. Dana Taylor's newest recruit turned out to be a force to be reckoned with.
"Isn't this a pitiful situation?" Evelyn remarked in that smoky voice of hers. She paced around Sasuke, inside the soundproof glass walls that separated Jax from them. "Dana told me everything that's happened with you. Showed me some Memories to get me up to date. I will admit, it was a valiant effort your mom put up, trying to get you out of our system. But she apparently didn't see how beneficial it really is." In her hands she held the goggles of her own creation, the hypnotic genius behind the villain Screenslaver.
"My mother stood up for me because she loves me," he said.
"Apparently not enough to let us save your life," Evelyn contradicted.
"Why are you here?" Sasuke demanded.
"Dana needed some help. And I..." she chuckled huskily, her lips curling into a smile. "I'm the best in the field."
"Help with what?"
"Well, our goal is to get you to live as long as possible. Of course, some people may be against our methods because of 'ethical' crap. So, we've decided to eliminate all those people. We've found that the most convenient course of action would be to start with would be Miss Jackson here."
Sasuke's eyes met Jax's. "What?" he asked, directing the question to Evelyn but refusing to look at her.
"If you'll recall, we have concluded that the most powerful force of tricking one into believing something is the individual's mind. And the only people that can truly take someone down are those that know the person best. So, adding all this together...well, this should sum it up."
In one swift motion, she clicked the goggles onto Sasuke's eyes before he could stop her. His face went slack, his neck straightening from where he had previously faced the ground.
"NO!" Jax shrieked.
"Phase One," Evelyn commanded, stepping back as a parting opened in the glass.
Jax immediately ran up to Sasuke through the doorway and lunged for the goggles. Sasuke shielded the attack, causing Jax to stumble back.
She didn't want to fight. Because she knew that, deep down, Sasuke was still there. The real one. The one she fell in love with, the one that fell in love with her.
She squared her shoulders, jaw nervously clenched. Sasuke ran at her, fist extended, but Jax put her arm up to block the blow, sending them both sliding and crashing into the wall. In reaching for the goggles again, Jax found both her wrists firmly pinned to the wall.
"Sasuke, please, it's me," she sobbed helplessly.
Sasuke's face didn't show the slightest hint of recognition. His hand curled once more into a fist as he punched her repeatedly, Evelyn standing back and watching the scene without a sliver of sympathy.
Jax cried out in pain and pressed her free hand to Sasuke's chest, shoving him backwards. She could feel some broken bones in her own body, and the pain felt like an explosion flaring up under her skin.
The space between Jax and Sasuke only prompted Sasuke to lunge at her again, this time kicking her feet from under her and causing her to hit the ground - hard. She winced, trying to push herself back up. She made it to her knees before Sasuke kicked her to the ground again with the heel of his shoe.
Jax didn't know what to do. She didn't have any weapons, and she wouldn't want to use them on Sasuke anyway. She was helpless. Evelyn - and now, this mind-controlled Sasuke - wanted her to die.
Sasuke stepped back, knowing that Jax would not be able to get up on her own.
Jax only had one option. With all the strength she could muster, she pushed herself from the ground and toward Sasuke, ignoring the pain. This sent them sliding, once more, into the wall.
And in the process, knocked Sasuke's goggles askew.
Jax froze, looking up at him.
Sasuke blinked.
"J-Jax?"
"Shit," Evelyn cursed.
Sasuke removed the glasses. "What happened? I-" he noticed the massive red stain on Jax's shirt. "You're bleeding. Jax, what happened?"
Jax didn't respond. First things first. She took the goggles from Sasuke's hand and snapped them in half, tossing them to the side. "Nothing," she said, not wanting him to worry. "She had you under her control, but...all that matters is that you're okay."
"I...I did this to you?"
"I'm okay."
"No, you're not. You're not okay. THIS...is not okay. Where is sh-" he turned to where Evelyn was, but she had fled. She had gotten away.
Sasuke took a breath and turned to Jax. "I'm so sorry," he whispered, hugging her close.
"It wasn't your fault," she said.
"I can't believe I-"
"Sasuke," she said, meeting his eyes. "Don't worry about it. This will heal. What matters is you."
"You matter too."
"No, I don't!" he said. "You're...you're all that matters. They're targeting you. We need to get you out of here."
"What about you?"
"If they have me, they won't hurt you."
"But you'll still be with them."
"That doesn't matter, Jax," he said. "As long as you're safe."
She sighed softly. "Sasuke-"
"You don't have to stand up for me," he said angrily.
"I'd rather die knowing you're safe than leave here just because that's what you wanted me to do."
"Why?"
"The same reason your mom stood up for you," she said. Sasuke's eyes, which had been locked on the ground, met Jax's. "Because I love you."
