Chapter 5

-Nora POV-

Year 850

The last stretch for the training was going on. The last chance to score good points.

Running through the rain, hand to hand combat, ODM-training,…
I noticed that Shadis was staring at me during my ODM-training. I slashed a dummy titan’s neck without a problem.

-Shadis POV-
‘Nora Sato. Brilliant instincts and at home with the ODM-gear, especially with her height. Has sometimes problems with authority, but otherwise an excellent soldier’

-Nora POV-
During the last hand to hand combat, I was training with Armin.
“Okay, you can come at me, Armin” I said and he ran to me with a dummy knife. I pushed his arm away and tackled him to the ground.

“Ouch” said Armin and I laughed.
“Sorry, you okay?” I asked and helped him up.

“You are too good” he said and smiled.
I noticed Reiner looking at me. Every once in a while, he confesses to me. But I turn him down every time.

“At least he didn’t confess today” said Armin and I laughed.
“You’re right. It is getting on my nerves. Last time, I managed to avoid it because Berthold told me Reiner was going to do it again” I said and sighed.

“Why do you always say no to him?” Armin suddenly asked. He didn’t look me in the eyes, like he was almost embarrassed to ask me.

“Don’t know. I don’t see him that way I guess. My head is too busy with other things than to think about getting a boyfriend” I said.

Ever since the cadet killers attack, Armin and I had become a lot closer. We talked every night, we studied together. And most of all, I was beginning to think about joining the Scouts. It was where Armin was going. And I couldn’t live with myself if he got hurt or killed because I wasn’t there.

And because of his stories, his stories about the outside world, the sea… it made me want to see it with him. It light a fire under me. I was beginning to feel trapped inside these walls and I wanted to get out of them…

A few weeks later we graduated, some with honours.
“Do you have heart?!” shouted a Commander.

“Yes sir!” we all shouted and saluted.
“As of this moment, you have 3 options open to you! Choose wisely! The Garrison Regiment, whose job is to reinforce the walls, the Scout Regiment, who rides out into Titan country to take back what was once ours, and the MP regiment, maintaining law and order under orders from his Royal Majesty. Those cadets allegeable for the MP’s have already been named. The rest of you, take a look. These are the top of your class!” shouted the Commander.

I stood next to Mikasa, she took first place and I took second place.

After the graduation there was a little party.
“Are you really gonna turn your back on the MP’s for the Scouts? Why in the world would you do that?” asked Thomas to Eren.

“The Scouts have always been my goal. I don’t want the easy life. Not with all the work I’ve put in. I trained to fight Titans” said Eren.

“Are you insane?!” shouted Thomas and everyone looked at him. “How many people have died? We’re talking a fifth of the population. If that doesn’t paint a picture for you I don’t know what will. This is our life now. We can’t beat them”

“Yeah, so what? We buckle, take it lying down? Things have changed. Maybe not a hell of a lot but enough. They aren’t the mystery they were 5 years ago. There’s still a long way to go, but we’ve made progress, every battle we lost taught us a lesson, gave us the tiniest inroad of hope. You’re telling me it’s better to cut our losses, let all the death and destruction be meaningless? Just to ball it up and accept it? Not on your life! Humanity’s future lies outside the walls! And I’m gonna clear the way! I’m gonna take back what was ours! I’ll drive them out! And as long as one of us can say that, we’re not done” said Eren, we all looked at him in silence… and suddenly he ran away, Mikasa and Armin following him.
