Chapter Forty: Birthday's and Blurring Between the Lines

Trenton:

"You know it's Lyra's birthday today," Cami whispers to me.

WAIT? WHAT? It was Lyra's birthday today?

"Why didn't she say anything?" I ask.

Cami looks uncomfortable and sighs. "She'd probably kill me if she knew I was telling you, but I get the feeling she's never really celebrated her birthday in a big way before."

"Well she is now." I feel incensed. I can't believe we almost missed her birthday. I text my brother and predictably get a...WHAT THE HELL! Message from him. I text Zach and Xav next and yeah get the same message.

"Please...I don't want her mad at me." Cami says.

"She won't be mad I promise. We just want to give her a birthday worthy of her."

Tallis comes bounding down the hall at just that moment. "It's Lyra's freaking birthday today and she didn't tell us?"

"Remember, she's just opening up to us and from what Cami told me she never had a 'real' birthday before."

"Well we're giving her a birthday. I've already texted Andrea to make a cake and we're skipping practice today to go birthday shopping. I've already called Xav and Zach and told them they'd better not have their secretary go shopping for our Nightingale. We'll go together. I know the best place for a gifts."

"From your Arianna days??" I say disgustedly.

"Well yes, but she was never interested in any of the pieces that I'm thinking about for Lyra, for our Nightingale."

"My pigeon."

"Yeah, yeah, your flying rat."

"Pigeons aren't flying rats," I punch him in the arm.

"Whatever makes you sleep better at night, Trent." Tal says with a smile.

Lyra:

"You under rotated there did you feel it?" Coach Rancic tells me and I nod

"I'm sorry."

"She comes towards me and reaches out and arm and I instantly shield my face. When I realize she isn't going to strike me I look thought peaked fingers to see she looks like she's about to cry.

"Did you think I was going to strike you, Lyra?"

"I...I...no..." I lie. "It was just an instinctive thing. I'm sorry Coach."

"No, Lyra, no, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what you've been through. I don't know the entire story. But I can promise you, Lyra, I will never strike you."

"You...you won't.

"No."

I swallow and nod. "Okay. Can we try again."

"Are you sure you ready, do you need a moment."

"No I need to nail that triple axle triple toe loop right now."

Coach Rancic smiles brilliantly, that's my girl. Okay go ahead. Go get them Lyra."
