Blue Curtis

“Blue, you’re late,” an assistant, like me, said when I entered through the doors of the office, “the meeting started two days ago.” I rolled my eyes and made my way over to the coffee machine. Trying on dresses is hard work.

“I was two minutes late,” I repeated, “not a lifetime.” She sighed and looked down at her tablet, her eyes jumping back up to me. “I’ll be there, I’m just pouring myself some coffee,” I added, getting a mug from the cabinet above the coffee machine and pouring in today’s blend.

“I see that, but your brother wanted you present at this meeting,” she replied and I sighed, pouring in some cream, and stirring.

“I’m just started my work in the advertising department,” I replied, tearing the top of raw sugar, pouring three packs in all. “I’m not exactly the most important employee yet. You’ve been here, what, two years. Shouldn’t you feel like you should attend the meeting?” I asked and she shook her head frantically.

“Now you’re three minutes late,” she shouted and I sighed, turning around and leisurely taking a sip of my coffee.

“No need to scream,” I said, letting the aftertaste test itself on my tongue, “I can hear you, I’ll be there. I didn’t do so well with my dad in my past job, so I’m going to actually try this time.” She nodded her lips tight as she watched something on the screen that I knew was the time.

“Ok, I’m going,” I muttered, my heels clicking on the tile as I made my way past her. She nodded, her eyes burning into my back as I walked down the hall on my way to the meeting room. The coffee scalded my tongue and I probably wouldn’t be having a sense of taste for a day or so, but it was worth it. It had taken Serena two more hours to pick a dress she found acceptable, and I’d gone home, taken a shower, and turned right around to come to a meeting I was supposed to be attending. I didn’t see the importance of it really; it’s just an advertising deal for a sports drink, but my brother was worried I was going to screw up anything worth my time, yet he still had to give me something to do.

“Sorry I was late, I got home little under an hour ago and-“ I muttered, entering the room, and surprising myself to find there were quite a few people in the meeting. My brother Nate at the front, an empty seat next to him, and five people seating in the half circle across, a woman and four boys occupying them. All the eyes were on me as I brought the coffee to my lips.

“Thanks for joining us Blue,” Nate muttered, his eyes set on me with some anger. I nodded, my eyes leaving him for a moment to look at whom I assumed were the possible endorsement deal waiting to happen, pausing on a rather familiar face that looked in pain.

“We meet again,” I muttered, a Cheshire cat smile on my lips as I walked over next to my brother. He nodded and shook his head and I laughed as the three other boys gave me a second glance. “Did your sister find a dress?” I asked, ignoring my brother’s stare as I set my coffee mug down.

“Yes,” Harry replied, his eyes set on me.

“No thanks to you,” I muttered, looking back over at my brother. “Anyway, I thought there were five of you,” I said, focusing on the group as a whole rather than on individuals.

“They are,” the women said, and I instantly labeled her as a manager. Phone placed on the table in front of her, hair twisted up into a severe bun, and I wouldn’t want her associated with me by choice. “But one of them decided to skip this meeting,” she said, her voice angry, and I felt bad for whoever skipped out on the meeting.
