I will never forget that night, the mournful yips and howls. The jeering of the village children. My mother tried to hold me back but I was stronger than her and with a clawing of my nails down her arm. I drew blood and she released me unintentionally.
Sasha's fur was matted with blood, and I'll be damned if every stone that hit her, didn't feel as though it had hit me.
I rushed out to our garden, and retrieved her with an anguished scream that terrified all the children and sent them off running like the cowards they were into the night.
I tried to heal Sasha the best I could, but there was nothing I could do. Eventually after hours of failed attempts I fell exhausted onto the sitting room couch, my masked face buried into the cushions.
The doctor my mother was currently seeing. Must have thought that I was asleep.
"Madeline! Your arm!" he exclaimed.
"I'm fine... what shall we do with the dog?"
Anger flooded his voice, "Madeline don't you see what she's doing to you?"
There was a charged silence and I focused on keeping my breathing even.
"You're going mad! She acts like a wild panther and yet you pander to her every desire..." he hissed.
"She was scared!" Mother exclaimed.
"That's no excuse... have you given any more thought to what I suggested?"
"I can't... I can't just send her away..."
"You can never truly be happy with her in this house. You've told me this yourself!"
"Hush! You'll wake her, let's talk somewhere else."
a door closed softly.
My heart pounded.
Send me away?!'
To the asylum?
Marie was supposed to talk to her! If she didn't...then nobody was happy in this house. Not with me being here. The realization shook me.
And with Sasha... with Sasha gone... There was no earthly thing keeping me tethered here.
What a freeing revelation.
I wasted no time whatsoever. It was night. I could move under the cover of darkness freely.
And I did... Flying like a songbird released from a gilded cage.
But foolishly I did not consider, even cages have their security.
