𓁹 a burden

The basement had always been cold, although I found it comforting as I had been forced to stay down here while Techno was out doing whatever it was he did. I understood he did this to keep me safe from the mysteries of the world but those were things that I wanted to understand, but instead, I was cooped up down here with a sack of potatoes to throw punches at. Carl's hooves were pounding on the ground which lay above my room which had meant Techno made it home, I didn't immediately get up because I had been told that if someone had managed to follow Techno home I would become an easy target out in the open. I waited for the three taps from the main level of the house before climbing up the ladder to greet Techno. Once I received the signal I stood up and reached for the ladder before letting my head fall between my arms, letting out a sigh and looking back up to the trapdoor I began to climb.

His distant mumbling was louder as I reached the last bar, he peered over the table and gave me a soft smile. Techno rarely did this so something was off. I pulled myself up through the narrow trapdoor and stared at him before looking him up and down, there was a dark red stain in his satin dress shirt.

"Jesus, what happened to you?" I murmured, keeping my eyes focused on the visible wound.

"Nothing too fatal, just a mild scrape. How were you while I was away? Did you finish up the book I gave you to read?" I ignored his questions. He did this to try and distract me from the fact he was wounded, it was pointless though. He knew I wasn't going to be distracted by the nonsense he spewed up. There was vet wrap and gauze on the other side of the table, I eyed them for a moment before making my way over to them. Techno sighed which was an audible acceptance of defeat. Slowly making my way over to Techno I signalled for him to unbutton his shirt, and he did so hesitantly. Letting the tap run to return to its usual chilly temperature I cupped some water in my hands and splashed it onto the wound hoping to rinse off the blood, reaching for the gauze I placed it on the main part of the wound and wrapped the vet wrap around his waist in order to keep the gauze in place. Letting my eyes wander up to his gaze I rested my head on his chest, Techno was on his second life and even though he claimed to be immortal to reassure me that he'd never leave me I seen right through that lie. He was the only family I had, my father figure. Ghostbur had found me outside L'manburg after it had been rebuilt the first time but he had no clue what to do with me. He had attempted to ask Tubbo for advice but he had ignored Ghostbur and sent him away from L'mangurg to deal with me, but of course, Ghostbur didn't have the heart to do it.

I was sent to live with Phil for a short while but I was kicked out for reasons I wouldn't like to list. Instead, Phil took me to live with Techno in hopes that I would be worked and trained into a useful weapon. Phil had assumed there would be no relationship between Techno and me, as Techno didn't let anyone into his life, especially not some random kid that was found outside of a war ground. He was partly wrong because although I was trained to become a weapon and acquire many skills, Techno and I bonded and he became what seemed like a father to me. This resulted in me not being able to do what I was trained to do because Techno wouldn't allow me to. Phil and Wilbur had both forgotten I existed so neither of them had ever questioned Techno on how I was which has always been a good thing as I was never an issue when it came to planning out missions.

Noticing my lack of focus Techno pulled me away from his chest and stared into my eyes, all he could see was a clouded gaze which caused his heart to drop. I felt his calloused fingers against my cheeks, they were rough to the touch but something about that was soothing. His eyes rested on the top of my head for a brief moment, neither of us were the type to get super emotional around others. Drawing his hands back to his own body he crossed his arms and gave me another soft smile before parting his lips to murmur something. He stopped himself and reached over his left side to grab the wired earbuds that had been sitting in the same spot for the last week, handing them to me he watched as I hesitantly grabbed them from the palm of his hand.

"Why don't you take Carl and go see if you can find something to do outside, I made sure I wasn't followed so you should be free to do whatever you like. Of course-" I cut him short by finishing his sentence.

"-within a 50-foot radius of the house, and to wear my warm clothes. Yes, I've heard it all a million times before." Techno hadn't bothered to shut his jaw when I finished his sentence so I reached up to his mouth and lifted it up in a playful manner. I didn't care to look back at his expression as I had already grabbed my coat and ran outside before he could give me a lecture on being a smartass.

Stepping into the cold air had a very refreshing tingle to it, it felt so much nicer than the feeling of the overheated house. Techno always tried to keep it warm in hopes to keep the basement heated but it resulted in the other levels of the house feeling like a sauna.

I looked over to the small stable that was attached to the side of the house, inside was a tall, well-built stallion who Techno had named Carl. This horse was fairly clever and he was loyal to Techno and Techno only which could be a struggle when I wanted to ride him, common tasks with Carl always took longer than they should have. A red rope halter sat on a hook on the post of the stall, as I attempted to reach for the halter I caught Carl glaring at me struggling to reach the halter. I wasn't even that short, the hook was just high up. I jumped a little and successfully grabbed the halter. Slipping into the stall I watched as Carl towered over me, he didn't scare me no matter how much he tried to, all he did was infuriate me. Getting a good grip on his mane I pulled his head down towards my body and he did as I asked willingly. Tacking up would be an even bigger problem.

The woods were quiet at this time of dusk, all I could hear was the flicker of the lantern and the snow crunching after Carl's steps. At this point, I was half asleep and Carl had noticed so he made the decision to turn tail and get back to the house before any unwanted creatures decided to make an appearance. I had been doing a little hunting during our ride and I had managed to shoot two black-tailed jackrabbits, both of which were hanging off the side of the saddle. The rabbits could attract wolves or the smell of blood could bring in the zombies, although there weren't many out in the snowy parts of the world.

That's when Carl halted in his spot and jerked his head up, causing me to jolt awake. My eyes slowly adjusted to the dim lighting of the lantern, Carl's ears were flicking in two directions, one to the east and one to the north. I had no clue what was happening and my tired brain assumed it was nothing so I clicked my tongue hoping Carl would respond well and continue on the path, but he refused to. Suddenly there were the loud sounds of branches crunching and snow sliding off the spruce trees. Readying my bow by drawing an arrow and pulling back on the bowstring I watched as a tall figure on two legs emerged from the trees. His eyes full of desperation and his skin pale, his murmuring unheard.
