Bramblestar opened his eyes. He was underwater, but he could see. It wasn't complete darkness.
He seemed as if he were floating in StarClan. But he wasn't in StarClan; he was in the lake. And as long as he stayed smart, he won't be seeing StarClan today.
He threw his legs forward, gliding under the water as if he were flying, and held his breath.
He reached the bottom, where he found the kit. It opened its mouth as if to mew, but instead died of taking in the water. It started to float to the top when suddenly, out of nowhere, a pale-brown blur rushed past. The kit was gone. Oh, no! Bramblestar thought. We, or me, need to get out of here! NOW!
But he wasn't leaving without Squirrelflight.
He spotted her. She was dropping to the sandy bottom, unable, not knowing, how to swim.
But I do, Bramblestar thought. He swam over to her, kicking up sand behind him. He grabbed the scruff of her neck and tried to pull her up to the surface. A dark gloomy shadow was creeping toward them. Bramblestar now had no choice but to abandon Squirrelflight.
I'm sorry, he silently said, and let go.Squirrelflight opened her eyes and stared at him with great question.
The figure grabbed her and she was gone with a drowned yowl.
Bramblestar kept on swimming upward. He needed to get up there; his Clan depended on him.
He turned his head. And there it was.
Without thinking, Bramblestar opened his mouth to let out a scream, but then quickly shut it and swam quicker.
But he was no match for the figure.
Dear StarClan, Bramblestar silently prayed, please don't let this muskellunge kill me! My clan needs me! There's no deputy! But before he finished, it was to late.
With a huge gulp of water, the giant fish sucked him in. It clamped its jaws shut tight and waited for Bramblestar to stop moving so swallowing would be easy. No, StarClan! PLEASE! He thought as he was in the fishes closed mouth. It was dark, but he could make out sharp, gleaming white teeth, and he was slowly getting more and more squeezed.
Then the he was moved forcefully backwards, and Bramblestar felt himself tossed into a deep, dark nothingness.
There was suffocation. . . .
And then it was all over.
