"You ready?" Ellie looked at me as I was looking through her journal.
"Wow you really missed me, i mean, look at these drawings. Every page has a drawing of me huh?" I smiled but felt a bit sad.
"Yes, I did." She smiled at me.
"Ready to head out?" I asked as I stood up, putting her journal back.
"Yeah."
"Alright, let's head out." I grabbed and opened the door.

As we walked to the diner we started to talk.
"Hey Logan?"
"Yeah?"
"You don't have a place to stay right?"
"Uhm, no. No not really."
"Do you wanna move in with me?"
"Wow, that was quick." I laughed softly.
"Wait, no you don't have to if you-"
"I'm fucking with you. Of course i'll move in with you, I don't really own much other than what's in the bag sooo"
"Oh fuck you"
I chuckled.

We made it to the diner, and I heard the music and people dancing.

I took a deep breath.
"You okay?" Ellie said stopping in front of me.
"Yeah, just haven't been around a lot of people in a while."
"Well, you can just stick with me, Jesse and Dina." I smiled.
"Since when did you take care of me so much?"
"You would be dead if it wasn't for me."
"True."
We walked into the diner.

Ellie saw Dina and Jesse and walked me towards them.

"Jesse, Dina, this is Logan. I've told you about him a few times."
I teased her.
"You've told them about me huh?" Jesse chuckled and stuck his hand out.
"I'm Jesse. I've heard great things about you."
I shook his hand.
"Nice to meet you Jesse. I don't know how you've dealt with Ellie for so long, I might need you to spill some secrets." Jesse laughed and Ellie lightly hit my arm.
"Shut up!"
Jesse turned to me again.
"I don't think i've ever seen Ellie this happy."
"Yeah me neither."
I turned to Dina, and stuck my hand out.
"Dina right?"
Instead of a hand shake, Dina pulled me for a hug.
"I've heard so many great things about you!" She sounded so excited to meet me, but as I looked at Ellie she looked a bit, angry?
I whispered to her.
"You okay, El?"
"Yeah, i'm fine" She whispered back.
"Okay, let me know if anything."
I turned back to Jesse and Dina.
"So, i've never been to a uh, party, before and I'm told there's drinks?"
Jesse put his hand on my back.
"Cmon, the drinks are this way."
I looked at Ellie.
"I'll be right back" She nodded, as I followed Jesse to where the drinks are.

ELLIE'S POV

As I saw Logan walk off with Jesse, I smiled at the friendship, but didn't want to take my eyes off him.
He just looked so, matured. I couldn't get over it.
Dina poked my arm
"Yeah?"
"He's cute."
"Yeah, he is." Those words irritated me but i know Dina wouldn't do anything to hurt me.
"How long have you known him?" Dina caught my attention again.
"Uhm... around 8,9 years."
"Oh wow, that's a long time."
"Yeah, ever since we were kids."
"How'd he get here?"
"I don't know."

LOGAN'S POV

"So..." I walked up to Ellie.
" Jesse told me about this, which is beer." I lifted my left hand slightly.
"And this, is whiskey. And i don't know what i'm supposed to drink."
Ellie giggled as she grabbed the whiskey out of my hand.
"Stick with beer for now as you get used to it."

I took a sip of the beer, and it tasted bitter.
"Ewww, how do you guys drink this stuff?"
They all laughed.
"You get used to it." Dina added.

After a while, Dina went to dance.

Ellie turned to me.
"She's a pretty good dancer." She was looking at Dina.
"Yeah, i've never really seen dancing but she looks good at it."
Dina then walked over to Ellie.
"Hey, mind if i steal her for a sec?" Dina looked at me.
"Go for it." I gave her an ingenuine smile.

I saw Dina drag Ellie onto the dance floor as Joel walked up to me.

"Christ kid, I can't believe how old you got."
"You're old too, old man."
Joel chuckled.
"Yeah but i've always been old."
"True."
"How old are you now kid?"
"21."
"21?! Holy shit."
I started to laugh as I put my drink down.
"Yes, Joel. I'm 21 years old."
"Fuck. You know if the world was normal you'd be considered a full grown up." He was shocked.
I chuckled softly.
I looked towards Dina and Ellie to see them kissing. My heart sank. Joel saw it too.
"Oh, kid. I'm sorry, but you know it's been years and she couldn't have just waited for you. She thought you were dead, i thought you were dead."
I looked down.
"Yeah, it's okay Joel, i'll be fine."
I then heard 2 old guy started yelling at them.
"Hey! This is a family event!"
I didn't hear what Ellie and Dina were saying but I boiled over, so I walked over there and pushed one of them, Joel doing the same.
"Hey! Lay off!" I said, my voice getting raspy from yelling.
It grew quiet for a second, but I turned to Ellie.
"Ellie, are you-"
"What the fuck are you doing?!" She was angrier than I expected her to be.
Joel walked next to me.
"He had no right-"
"And you guys do?! I don't need your fucking help."
Ellie and Dina walked away.
I could feel everyone's stares.

"Hey, so uhm. Mind if i stay with you tonight Joel?"
"Yeah, let's go."
Joel and I walked to his place, I was feeling a bunch of emotions. Angry, sad, anxious.

We sat on Joel's porch.

"Hey, can I use your guitar?" I looked at Joel.
"Yeah sure, kid. You still know how to play?"
"Yeah, of course."

I started playing a tune that I had heard. Joel went in and got coffee, giving me some to try.

"What's this?"
"Coffee."
"Ohhh. You used to always talk about this."
"Try it." Joel chuckled.
I took a sip, tasting the bitterness, but oddly liking it.
"It's so bitter."
Joel smiled.
"It's an acquired taste."
"Sure is."
I kept drinking and once I finished I went to the kitchen, but on my way back I heard Ellie through the door.

"Where'd you get that?" She was talking to Joel.
"You know those people that came by last week?"
"Oh."
"Little embarrassed as to what I had to trade for it but, it's not bad."
It was quiet.
"So you and Dina? She your girlfriend?"
"No, well... I like her."
"Look, I don't know what those girls intentions are, but I know, she would be lucky to have you."
Ellie got angry.
"You're such an asshole."
"I wasn't trying to-"
"I was supposed to die in that hospital! My life would've fucking mattered! But you took that from me."
Die in the hospital?
"Lord knows, if he gave me another chance at that moment, I would do it all over again."
It grew quiet again.
"Yeah, I don't think I can ever forgive you for that... but... I'd like to try."
"I'd like that."
It grew quiet once more.
"Okay, well... see you around. If you see Logan, tell him to come home. Please?"
"Yeah."

I heard footsteps getting off the porch as I leaned on the kitchen counter and Joel came in.
"Oh shit." He saw me.
"What was that about? The hospital?" I was worried.
"Come on." He tapped my shoulder.
We walked to the couch and he started to tell me the story.

"Making a vaccine, would have killed her. So i stopped them."

I didn't know what to say. It was a lot at once.

"I don't think, i would've done any different." I told Joel.
Joel stayed quiet.
"I get it, Ellie's important, to both of us. You didn't want to lose her, and I wouldn't either."

After we talked, Joel gave me a blanket and I slept on the couch. Thinking of the dance, Ellie and Dina.
