"I'm a little confused. I barely know you, so I guess that's ok."
I looked up as I tucked into my food, wondering which doughnut to get for dessert. I knew I was probably going to explode at the end of my first week here.
"He's fine. You've gotta admit," Jones continued, sitting up as she sighed dreamily.
"Oh God, it's like a teen movie! You're the British girl who falls for the jock-"
"Oh yeah, and what happens with Malibu Barbie over there? Jones. Look at me."
I waved my hand over myself, as she stared at me blankly.
"I'm just, normal, and I'm fine with that. Really."
"But, you're not normal."
"Thanks..." I laughed, my attention suddenly drawn to a girl with purple hair and dungarees marching over to our table.
"Who's the stray?"she demanded, before peering at me with interest.
"This is Victoria. She's from England. Vix, this is Hayley."
"Ooh, do you have tea every day at four pm?"
I shook my head, wondering where she had heard that.
"I drink tea all of the time. I've heard you're quite the artist." I changed the subject as she grinned, offering to show me her work. As I marvelled over her drawings, I saw Jones grab Hayley suddenly.
"Saturday night. Vix has to come."
Hayley looked at me, before nodding.
"Sure. Dress slutty."
"Excuse me?" I stammered, staring at Jones who nodded.
"Yes. Think, black dress, fishnet stockings-"
I shook my head with confusion, as Hayley sighed.
"This Saturday it's the Autumn Party, here on campus. I take it you're staying here?"
"No, actually. We couldn't afford the fees."
"Oh. That's cool, you can stay at mine," smiled Hayley kindly as I held my hands up.
"I do love a good party, but is dressing like a slut compulsory?"
I listened as the girls filled me in on how the Autumn Party was treated like Halloween, with everyone dressing up. As it was their first ever one, they were keeping it traditional and each dressing up.
"I get it. I'll go as a witch."
This was because it would be so easy for me. I loved black, and wore it all of the time.
"Yes, a sexy witch!" declared Hayley, as Jones jumped up.
"Oh, shit. I have a French class in five! Vix, I'll see you tomorrow?"
She grabbed my phone, typing her number in as Hayley smiled at me.
"See you around, Queen Vic," she winked, before heading in the opposite direction to Jones.
Queen Vic. It had been a while since anyone had called me that. My dad used to say it to me when I was little, claiming I was named after a pub on a soap opera. I finished my food, before emptying my tray. I wandered over to the doughnuts, when I heard a voice at my elbow.
"Sprinkles. Always."
I looked up with surprise to see the guy from our class earlier, Doherty. He reached over me, stealing a glazed doughnut, covered in sprinkles.
"Right. Sprinkles. I like the chocolate ring."
"Plain, yet classy. Suits you."
I stared at him, wondering where these guys got off offending me.
