"BALLAD." MR. SCHUESTER said as he wrote it down on the board. After everyone stopped welcoming Tatiana back to the Glee Club, he had got on with the lesson. "From Middle English, balade. Who knows what this word means?"
"It's a male duck." Brittany answered and Tatiana furrowed her eyebrows.
"A male duck is a drake." She replied to the blonde who just shrugged in her direction. "Well, at least I think so - I mean, it's what Google tells me."
"Kurt." Mr. Schue said, after looking at his and Rachel's raised hands.
"A ballad is a love song." Kurt said, sitting up straighter in his chair. Tatiana furrowed her eyebrows before leaning back in her chair.
"Sometimes." Mr. Schue shrugged. "But they don't always express love. Ballads are stories set to music - which is why they're the perfect storm of self-expression. Stories and music are the way we express feelings that we can't get out any other way. Okay, now Sectionals are in a few weeks and there's a new rule this year - we need to perform a ballad."
"Looks like my weekly letter to the Ohio Show Choir Committee finally paid off!" Rachel exclaimed, smiling towards Puck who sent a confused one back. Tatiana kicked Rachel's chair in annoyance.
"Okay. So here's our assignment for the week: I'm going to pair you off, and I want you to pick a ballad to sing to your partner. Look them right in the eye, find the emotion you want to express, and make them feel it."
"I pick Quinn." Finn said quietly.
"No, no, no. Too easy. Your partners will be chosen by fate." Mr. Schuester said, and everyone oo'd.
"I put all your names in this hat. Whoever you choose is your partner." Mr. Schue told them all, and Brittany leaned into Santana. "I bet the Duck's in the hat."
"But Matt's out sick today." Santana said, and Tatiana frowned. If she didn't break up with Matt, she would know where he was. But, since they broke up, Santana had stopped having Edward as her buddy ( although Tatiana swears that stopped a while ago ), and moved onto Matt, who agreed to try and get over Tatiana 1 it wasn't working, but no one knew that. "He had to go to the hospital, 'cause they found a spider in his ear." Santana chuckled and everyone grimaced in disgust, while Alex covered his ears.
"Uhm... I guess I'll just have to put my name in the hat for now. Who's up first?" Puck got up and walked towards the hat, and pulled out a name.
Everyone drum-rolled. "Mercedes." Tatiana saw Mercedes roll her eyes, and she chuckled.
"Quinn." Artie said, smiling. Quinn looked over at Tatiana before looking back at Artie with a soft smile.
Edward stood up and read a name off the paper. "Everleigh." Everleigh smiled brightly at him and Tatiana made her way up to choose a paper.
