I remove my ear from the vent, standing up straight and going to sit on the couch. What were Harry and James talking about? It was obvious the whole time that Harry had been shady about something, and now it was obvious that James had figured it out.
After sitting there for minutes contemplating, Harry comes in to find me staring at the ground.
“Sorry, we just had some things to talk about.”
I nod and walk forward so I’m standing in front of him, looking down at my folded hands.
“You okay?” I nod again and look him in the eyes. He reaches down and separates my hands, taking one of them in his and bringing me out of the library and down the stairs.
James is sitting in the TV room, looking at a book. Immediately his aura hits me, and I mentally cringe. It suddenly struck me that this man is also a vampire, and most likely a lot older. A sort of fear grows in the very back of my mind, not enough to bother me but just enough so I’m aware of it
He looks up at me, a stiff smile appearing on his face.
“Sorry about that… Bay.” The way he hesitates and draws out my name gives me chills, and not in a good way. “Just catching up with my cousin. He’s told me a lot about you.”
Harry brings me over to another couch and sits down, pulling me to sit right next to him.
“He hasn’t told me anything about you.” I say, trying to change the subject.
“Well, there’s not much to tell. But I’m sure you know the obvious.”
“What are you talking about?”
“About the kind of people we are. What we are.”
Harry tenses, and I can tell he hasn’t told James that I know about the vampire world. And I doubt he wants him to know that. So I lie.
“It doesn’t bother me that you guys are rich. It’s not that big of a deal.”
James narrows his eyes.
“Oh, is that what he told you?”
“Well yes, is there something else I should know?”
He hesitates before saying, “No, there’s nothing else.”
Harry relaxes and I can practically feel the relief running through him.
“So how did you end up living here?” James asks.
“She was struggling to pay rent,” Harry answers first. “So as a friend, I offered to let her stay here.”
“And now you two are much more than friends. How romantic.” He smirks at Harry, something off about his tone.
“Alright James, I think it’s time for you to go.”
“But I just got here, don’t be so rude to your guest. You could at least invite me to stay for dinner.”
Suddenly I think of a way to find out what Harry is hiding. If James knows, I can try to find out from him. All I need to do is get him alone, which is both terrifying and almost impossible. But it just might work.
“That’s actually a great idea. I was thinking about cooking something nice tonight, might as well let him stay until dinner.” I look at Harry who’s staring at me like I’m crazy, obviously confused why I said that.
“See Harry, even she wants me to stay. How could you refuse family? Or for that matter, your girlfriend?”
Girlfriend… am I even Harry’s girlfriend?
