Everything I Could Have Wanted

Yuri couldn't sleep.

By all means, she should have been able to. It was a very quiet and peaceful night. It wasn't too hot; it wasn't too cold. She was securely tucked in her queen-sized bed, and she had the comforting presence of the love of her life by her side. By all means, she should have been able to sleep.

Yet, here she was, wide awake.

The restless bookworm let her gaze drift to her right and fall on her sleeping girlfriend. She was resting on her stomach, her arms wrapped tightly around her pillow. Her hair fell loosely and messily on the bed; her breaths were gentle and soft. She looked so peaceful. It made Yuri smile.

If only she could feel some of that peace tonight.

She shifted to rest on her side and gazed longingly through the window at the night sky. It was a clear night; even inside, she could see an abundance of stars. She sighed heavily as she attempted and failed to recall a story of the stars, a futile distraction from the worries plaguing her mind.

"Mmm...Yuri..." A raspy moan from behind caught the bookworm's attention, and she turned around to see that Natsuki was awake, looking at her with droopy eyes.

"Hi, Natsuki," Yuri whispered, turning to face her. "What are you doing up?"

"I was gonna ask you the same question," Natsuki mumbled.

"I...just can't sleep tonight," Yuri replied. She shrugged and added, "Oh, don't worry about me. I'm just a little restless, tonight. That's all."

The pink-haired girl yawned and sat up to stretch out her body like a cat. When she felt loose enough, she shifted to lie down on her back closer to Yuri. "What's on your mind?"

"...It's nothing, I assure you..." Yuri answered, looking away.

"..."

"..."

"...You're lying."

"Eh? What do you mean, I'm lying?" Yuri asked incredulously.

"If nothing was on your mind, you'd be asleep," Natsuki reasoned. She pushed herself higher up the bed, wrapped her arm around Yuri, and pulled her in close, allowing the taller girl to rest her head on her chest. "Besides, I know by now when something's bothering you. Please tell me...even if it's minor, I'm here for ya."

"It...I..." As she stammered, Yuri found herself cuddling Natsuki a little tighter out of nervousness. Try as she might, Yuri could see no way out of this other than telling the truth.

"I guess...I guess I'm just feeling a little insecure about something," Yuri admitted, unable to make eye contact with Natsuki.

"What?!" Natsuki asked with a chuckle. "But you're, like, the smartest, most beautiful person in existence! Why are you feeling insecure?"

"What?!" Yuri exclaimed, thankful that it was too dark for Natsuki to see how red her face had gotten. She buried her face in her hands and giggled, "No, I'm not!"

"Oh, really?" Natsuki smirked. "Well, let's see. Straight A student, sophisticated tastes in literature and poetry, pretty eyes, adorable smile...not to mention your, uh, "posture." That last bit was under Natsuki's breath, but Yuri still heard it, made a fist, and playfully bonked a smirking Natsuki on the head. "OW!" she yelped, grabbing her head and laughing.

"I heard that, you pervert!" Yuri giggled. At that point, both of them burst into uncontrollable laughter. Amidst Yuri's distress, it felt really nice to have that moment of merriment.

"All...all jokes aside, what's got you feeling insecure?" Natsuki asked, petting Yuri on the head as they were both settling down.

"I...I guess I'm just a little...I don't know...concerned a-about our relationship," Yuri admitted. Natsuki went cold and quiet and abruptly stopped petting Yuri.
