A lone dragon lay curled on a bed of soft furs and pillows, her wings draped over her to keep her warm and her tail tucked tightly against her body. Her sides rose and fell with her breathing as she slept. Her dreams were peaceful, until the harsh cry of a parrot awoke her rather abruptly from the serenity.

She bolted upright, blinking the blur from her eyes as she looked around her bedroom. Sunlight shone in through the tree branches that draped over her window. Her jaws parted in a yawn and she sat up, her talons rubbing her face.

"Good! You're awake, Halo!" came a voice from her doorway on the other side of the room. Her brother stood in the frame of the door, beaming at her with amber eyes. The sunlight caused his deep blue scales to glow like sapphires and the feathers that covered them took on a beautiful shine. Properly named, Blue was a sight to behold for most young FeatherWings looking for a partner, as for his sleepy, grumpy sister, he was the last thing she wanted to see.

"What do you want, Blue?" she grumbled before beaming and throwing a pillow at his head. He dodged it effortlessly.

"Just wanted to make sure you were awake in time for school, mother and father won't be pleased to hear you're late again," Blue said before disappearing from the door and down the hall. "So get your tail moving, Lazy Scales!" he called.

"Whatever you say," Halo said with a sigh.

She moved over to the mirror that hung on her wall, over her desks of parchment, quills, and a few items she had found around the island that she kept just because they looked nice. As her reflection stared back at her, Halo had the thought that she had every morning. How she lacked the feathers of the FeatherWings. How she looked nothing like her brother, or either of her parents, or anyone else on Paean. How it's been four years since she was told, on the day of the animus test that every dragonet on the island took at the age of three, that she was in fact an animus like so many other young dragonets on the island. They also decided to break the news to her that she didn't come from Paean at all, but was found as an egg by her parents, washed ashore in a tangle of seaweed.

Halo raised her talons to her face. Her scales were a light purple-pink hue, one that didn't really show itself on FeatherWings. She had no feathers, but instead frills behind her ears and tall spines on her neck that shortened as they got to her back. She also had an unusual trait where the scales around her eyes changed with her moods involuntarily of her will. Despite being so different from her family, or any of the dragonets she had gone to school with for the last four years, none of them ever treated her differently. Even the King and Queen of Paean were more surprised to discover her animus ability than the fact that she was a different tribe of dragon all together.

"You throwing a pity party for yourself again?"

Halo was startled by the new voice that came from her doorway. Spinning around she expected to see her brother again, but instead, a beautiful female FeatherWing stood between the frame. Her soft face and beautiful maroon scales and feathers always took her breath away when she saw her.

"No, I was not pitying myself, Piper!" Halo snorted defiantly, "I was just wondering how long it'll take the King and Queen to decide I am ready to learn where I came from, that's all!"

With a huff, Halo strode past Piper and down the hallway of their hut towards the balcony that overlooked the forest below. Piper followed, chuckling to herself. Getting to open air the two dragonets spread their wings and took off, swooping down towards the forest before angling upwards in the direction of a tall peak to the north.

As they climbed higher they could see the entirety of Paean with large expanses of forests, beaches and cliffs as far as they could see. Rainbow colored birds cawed and flew from the trees as they soared over the canopy. The calls of monkeys and wild boar echoed in a symphony below them. There was no denying that this place was beautiful.
