Whitley adjusted in the uncomfortable wooden chair in the library as she anxiously chewed on the tip of her favorite pen. The time on her MacBook read 7:16 p.m. which meant she had been staring at the same screen in her chemistry ebook for the past twenty minutes. Whitley let out a distressed huff before entangling her fingers in her hair and tightly shutting her eyes to prevent herself from having a mental breakdown. Usually, Whitley would study in the student center with her friends, but the numerous distractions there earned her 2 missed assignments and a C on her first chem test; a grade she had never received before. Whitley closed her MacBook briefly before massaging her temples attempting to regain some sort of focus. Just as she opened the laptop back up, her phone dinged. It was a text from August.

No, Whitley had not put her pride aside to get to know August and ask for his number, and no, August had not found sudden interest in Whitley to ask for hers. In a bizarre turn of events, however, both students found themselves partnerless for Dr. Cantrell's group project. Shortly after the project had been assigned, his partner Kendra (chestnut brown curls) got a big modeling opportunity in California which would take her away from school for an extended period of time. She was forced to drop out of Dr. Cantrell's course and take all of her classes online. So, Dr. Cantrell placed him in Whitley and her partner Tenasia's group. Coincidently, Tenasia decided to change her major shortly after August got added to the equation, and she no loner needed the course. Long story short, Tenasia dropped the class leaving the unsuspecting pair as partners.

One would think being partners for a semester long assignment would bring two people a little closer together, but that wasn't the case with these two. Despite being partners, the two barely spoke to or even looked at each other. When Tenasia was still in the picture, she would facilitate all group meetings. Once everyone was clear on what their role was, the group would just sit in silence and work. Although, August spent a significant amount of time on his phone and barely had any notes written down by the end of the group meeting. Whitley and August haven't had a meeting since Tenasia's departure. It was as if the two still expected Tenasia to lead the group despite not being in the class anymore. Whitley didn't complain, though. She didn't really want to meet with August alone. As an introvert, she was more comfortable working by herself anyway. Plus, the two knew their roles already and there was nothing they did in meetings that they couldn't have done alone.

Whitley finally picked up her phone reading his message which instantly made her stomach flutter with nervousness.

Wya?

She contemplated not responding, or maybe even delaying the response to an inconvenient time. Fearing she'd get caught, Whitley decided to let August know where she was. Minutes passed and she got no further response from him, thinking he'd probably changed his mind about meeting. Whitley sighed in relief before picking up her pen and continuing to jot down chemistry notes. She was only on module two of the homework and there were eight modules in the unit; all of which were due tonight. After three more failed attempts at answering the question correctly, Whitley threw her pen down in defeat, leaning back in the chair ready to take an L for the night. She began to survey her surroundings, thinking while she was struggling with her work, someone else in the room was breezing through theirs easily. Suddenly, her phone vibrated again.

I'm outside. We can work on the project at my crib.

Whitley let out an annoyed sigh. She felt the meeting was pointless,  and frankly she had no time for it if she wanted to get her homework turned in by 11:59. However, in an effort not to inconvenience him since he was already out front, Whitley packed up her things and reluctantly began to make her way out of the library. She made the walk to August's car an extra long one. She was extremely nervous about being alone with him because he was too uncomfortably mysterious to her. As far as she knew, they had nothing in common aside from them sharing the same Philosophy class and being parters for the project. As the elevator doors slid open, she got a clear view of the entrance of the library. Sitting on the other side of the doors was August's yellow charger.
