A place for us: Flash's story

(To be clear: all of the dragons in this story have an Australian accent, but I didn't include it in the dialog because one, it would be obnoxious to write, and two, it would be hard to read. Plus, the accent doesn't really fit the mood of the story.)

Flash closed the door silently, sneaking up on the figure that was inside the house. They whirled around and tackled him, taking him by surprise. Both dragons ended up lying on the floor, laughing hysterically. Flash stood up and helped Downpour onto her feet. "One of these days, I'll getcha."
"Not in a million years, Flash. You're not nearly as sneaky as you think." She kissed him and smiled. "So, how was today?"
"Pretty big, I'll say. The council learned that the Starwings fled. I'm afraid to say that the Wraithwings are searching for them. If our friends aren't careful, they might go extinct. The queen sent some secret messengers to tell the other tribes to harbor any Starwings that we can." He sighed. "Your sister still seems to be struggling, you should probably give her a visit."
Downpour nodded sadly. "I'll make sure of it. Anything else?"
Flash grinned. "Yep. There's always positives, right? I saw the queen had an engagement ring. You know what that means?"
"Really! Strike, engaged? I never thought I'd see the day. Who's the lucky guy?"
"Not sure, my best guess is Cyclone. Those two are inseparable now." He chuckled.
"The thief? Hmm, well, he'd better be good to my sister."
"Strike would bite his head off if he wasn't, I'm sure he'll be good. For his own sake. So how was your day?"
"Well, I did some research on the Wraithwings to see if there's anything we could use against them. And, I found nothing. All documents that I could find were so incredibly vague that nothing was useful. So, I pretty much wasted my whole day." She sat down, thinking. "I also was thinking... that we could have a dragonet? Soon, maybe?"
"You're really sure?" He looked skeptical.
"Flash, I've been thinking about this for years. I think I'm ready."
"Alright, if you say so."
"Flash? Do you think we'd be able to raise them well?"
He gave her a small smile and nodded. "Downpour, you and me have been through thick and thin together, I doubt our own dragonet will change anything. It doesn't matter what we do, there will always be a place for us."
She smiled back at him. "Aww, so young and wise. But you're right. There will always be a place for us."

As soon as Flash entered the house, Downpour was upon him, jumping with joy. Quite literally.
"Woah, slow down there. What's with the excitement?"
"I have a name! I know what he's to be called." She was grinning like mad, with good reason. She had been trying to think of a good name for weeks.
"Oh, so it's a he? I suppose mothers always know. What'd you think of?" He smiled down at her.
"Sonic."
"Oh, I like it. Sonic."
"So, any news from the council?"
"Supposedly, the Hypnowings are sending their first squad of soldiers to start negotiations. Knowing that queen, though, makes me think that there's something else coming. But we'll be fine, because Strike put up border patrol to prevent any unwanted dragons from getting in."
"Alright. Not too bad then. I mean, if Psychic is willing to open negotiations now, I think this war could be over in a matter of weeks."
"Here's hoping."

"Flash, you know this isn't right! I can't just take your dragonet!"
"Please, Thunder, you're the only dragon I can trust with this." Flash had tears in his eyes, pleading with his best friend.
"You should be the one raising him, Flash. I can't replace you." Thunder argued, pacing around the room.
"He doesn't need to know who I am." Flash let out a shaky breath. "Just pretend that I'm dead, he doesn't need to know the difference."
"I can't do that. You know I can't."
"Thunder, listen to me. Listen. I'm anything but mentally stable at the moment, and I don't want Sonic to experience any of that pain. My entire fucking family is dead, you and Sonic are all that I have left. I wouldn't be able to properly raise him. I trust you, I know that you could."
Thunder was silent for a while. He pulled Flash into a hug, and they stayed like that for a while. The two friends eventually let go and stepped back.
"Fine. But I'm not going to lie to him."
