Chapter 2
I shift in bed, as the light hits me directly in the face. Groaning in my groggy state, I open my eyes slightly, allowing them to adjust to the brightness. Today, is August the 25th. The day before the beginning of this school year. Now, for me, that doesn't mean school. I dropped out of school two years ago. No, this means all of the teenagers in the pack, that had previously been gone for warrior training, will be arriving today. Which means, the small month long respite I had had from the worse of the abuse, will be over. Splendid.
Pushing my covers off, and climbing out of bed, I walk over to the wardrobe that holds the small amount of clothes I actually own. Pulling on one of my few tees and jeans, I begin getting ready for this day. I brush my hair up into a bun, clipping up any stray pieces. I never leave my hair down any more, sense the time when Nora Greenfield purposefully slammed it in the door. I also make sure to keep it trimmed to shoulder length. Last night, I was caught by surprise, but I won't make the same mistake twice.
Going over to the small basin of water, I brush my teeth and wash my face, before walking over to the attic window, and dumping the water out. We don't have running water in the attic, so at night, I fill this basin up, so I can brush my teeth. I bathe at night also, because my stepmother permits me to use her bathroom, so long as I scrub it afterwards. My stepmom, isn't particularly horrible to me, she just does nothing to defend me when my dad and the others abuse me. Not that I blame her, she would suffer the wrath of my father if she did. In human years, she is probably about thirty-three, compared to my dad who is around his sixties. I don't know if she has an actual mate or not, but I do know that she has no more choice in her life than I do.
When I'm finally ready, I quietly slip on my tennis shoes, and head down the attic stairs to the kitchen. It's about four in the morning, and I have to get up early to cook breakfast for the pack. No one really gets up until around eight, but it takes a very long time to make breakfast for thirty-two werewolves. Werewolves eat a lot. I need to eat a little more than the average human, but nowhere near the amount of a werewolf.
Our pack, the Half-Moon pack, is actually one of the smallest packs in the Werewolf Community. That's why, we only have one vote in the Council, the body of government for werewolves. The largest is the Blood Moon pack, which is rumored to have over three hundred wolves, and they are supposed to be ruthless warriors. As odd as this sounds, we have never had a werewolf civil war. Anytime there is a war among the supernatural world, it is between the different factions (i.e. Vampires vs. Werewolves, or Witches vs. Fey, etc.), never between like species. Occasionally, rogues become a problem, but those in the Community don't count them as a part of our kind. So, a war with them is not a civil war to the Community.
In the past, we would often have interpack events, such as the Moonlight Games, which were like the Olympics, but for werewolves. These events were aimed at helping unmated wolves find their mates, as well as with the purpose of creating unity between the packs. But, for over two centuries, there has not been an interpack mating. And because unmated males are extremely aggressive, it became too difficult to host these events, if no large good would come of it. So, starting with the Games, piece by piece they stopped having these events. The last interpack event was the Crescent Ball, but even that was over a century ago. But, the Council has started trying to bring these back. In two weeks, the Blood Moon pack will be hosting the first full interpack Meeting in over a century. The Meeting will be held on the night of the crescent moon. Every single werewolf in the seven packs of the world will gather there to mingle together, enjoy food and games, and possibly make new friends. It's stirred up a lot of excitement among the members of our pack. Everyone can't help but hope that maybe the return of these events will bring the return of interpack mating.
