Chapter 12
I stumble back, my hand ending up in the punch bowl, but I don't really notice. I feel a sudden and strong jolt of panic and fear that I know immediately is not my own. I just felt what Keenan is feeling and his feeling is so strong that it actually knocks me over. When I hit the ground, the wolves see that as their moment to attack and the head one leaps at me. As I watch his snarling fangs fly at me, I prepare myself for the pain, but instead, I see a flash of white. My eyes widen when I see a small, completely white wolf pinning the big black wolf to the ground.
"Hazel, no!" I scream, too little too late. The black wolf tries to clamp Hazel by the neck, but she manages to squirm enough to get out of his reach.
I go to stand, but a pair of arms pushes me back down and under the table. From the lack of tingles, I know it is not Keenan, but the table cloth is blocking everything, except for a pair of grey converse, from view, so I can't see who it is. A second later, I hear deep snarling and the awful sound of something snapping. There is a whimper and then from under the table, I see a white furry body hit the ground. It's not moving. The grey converses suddenly turn into big brown paws and the moment a loud, ferocious roar rips through the air, those big brown paws disappear. I know immediately that that sound came from Keenan.
I take that as my moment to scurry out from under the table and over to Hazel. She looks horrible, patches of fur ripped out, leaving bleeding bite marks, and I am pretty sure that her left front leg is broken. When I see her chest rise just a little bit, relief floods me because at least I know she is alive. But, she cannot heal from these on her own. I have to get her to a doctor, but I don't know how. I look up when I hear a whimper and see the big black wolf locked in the iron grip of a much bigger grey wolf. Instinct tells me that is Keenan. And he is livid. I can't see any of these wolves making it out alive. I notice a large brown wolf facing down two of the other intruders and a bunch of other large wolves are taking care of the rest. They are all doing just fine, but no one is around to help me. The crowd is too distracted to be of help and plus, I don't think it would be a good idea to move her right now.
I look back at her desperately and see that she is loosing a lot of blood. I need to do something to stint the flow, even a little bit, to give her body somewhat of a change to heal. A thought hits me and I immediately grab the bottom of my dress and rip a large piece off. I used to sneak watch Grey's Anatomy, so I learned a little something about patching up wounds. Hopefully, that knowledge won't fail me now. Using my bare hands, I start moving her fur aside so I can address the biggest wound on her neck. But, something weird happens when my skin makes contact with her wounds. My hand starts to burn and I start to recoil, but when I literally see her skin start to knit itself together, I resist the urge to pull my hand away. Acting on impulse, I take my other hand and put it over another wound. The same thing happens. As the wounds close, Hazel begins to whimper. It is upsetting to hear her in so much pain, but a whimper means she is alive and that's what matters.
When the big wounds are healed I move my hands to her leg and I grasp it tightly. The effect is immediate, but by Hazel's howls, painful. Her bones start moving underneath my fingertips, piecing themselves back together again. But, from the feel of it, her leg isn't just broken, but shattered.
The longer I hold on, the more woozy I get. My vision starts to swim, and my head begins to throb, but I keep my burning hands on her leg. I am determined not to move until I am sure she can survive without me. I don't know what exactly I am doing, but I do know that I am helping and that is all that matters. Just as I black out, I hear someone call my name.
But, I am too gone to answer.

"I have already told you, I don't know how she did it!" a voice snaps frustratedly. I know from the effect on my heartbeat that it is Keenan. But, everything sounds kind of distant, like I have cotton balls in my ears.
