DURING THE CASE of a zodiac killer copycat, emily has informed the team that spencer's birthday had already passed, and they all forgot it. they felt terrible, of course. everyone was just so caught up in everything else, that it never even crossed their minds. however, emily had an idea to make up for it. without his knowledge, she called penelope to decorate the conference room and to make it look happy and cheerful. once they got back, they were going to buy a cake and make time to purchase presents for him. the team believes spencer reid truly does deserve the best.

currently, the team was standing in the conference room back in the BAU, patiently waiting for emily to bring back spencer. once the door opened, they all immediately cheered. a chorus of "surprise!" and "happy birthday!" flowed through the room, causing an instant smile growing on spencer's face. they all had their chance to hug and greet him, a radiant, beaming grin on everyone's face. penelope held up a chocolate birthday cake with lit up numbered candles in place, the number 30 on the cake. he happily blew out the candles as everyone clapped. "open your presents!" emily encouraged him, pointing to the huge pile of gifts on the round table.

"yeah, and i paid for mostly all of them." rossi joked.

spencer opened his gifts one by one. who knew seven people could give one person so many presents? one of the last ones were from olivia. he took the gift that was wrapped in purple wrapping paper and started ripping it open. it was the first book of the harry potter franchise, one of the only books spencer reid hasn't read. "harry potter?" he questioned, glancing at liv.

"you said you've never read it, so i got you it." olivia told him.

"can't wait to start reading." he smiled, then continuing to open the last few presents. his gifts were from the team individually, or some of them got him a gift together. afterwards, they had slices of cake, all talking to one another.

"i forgot to ask you earlier how the book event was." olivia said, sitting beside spencer.

         "what book event?" he asked.

"didn't you and emily go to this event where the both of you were guest speakers?" olivia questioned.

"oh, yeah." he recalled what she was talking about. in the event, he was awkward. he didn't receive any replies from anyone, no one really talked to him, and when they did, they weren't even interested in the FBI. "it wasn't as great as i thought it'd be. i tried to ask them if they knew what dendrophilia is, which is a—"

as he began his next few words, so did olivia. in unison the two said, "a fetish for trees." spencer looked at olivia in astonishment. the girl was looking down at her slice of cake, fiddling with a few crumbs with her fork. he felt like he was the only one who knew what other people would call, "weird facts".

"oh um," olivia started, remembering something she wanted to tell spencer. "i know it's technically not your birthday, but we are celebrating it, so i just thought maybe i should tell you what i told anna about you because i've thought about it, and you should know."

"are you sure? because you were very persistent in not telling me."

"yeah, that was because i didn't know how you were gonna interpret it, but i've actually already told you what it was, so i just thought why not confirm it." she started, "i told her that my favorite trait about you is that you ramble about statistics and facts a lot."

"really? normally, people find it unusual and strange. others would pretend to listen, or actually just interrupt me and walk away. people ramble for many different reasons; when they're passionate about a topic, anxious about something, when asked to speak about something they actually don't know much about, and some people just naturally ramble." spencer informed her.

she grinned at him before placing a hand on his shoulder, "happy belated birthday, spencer." she walked away to throw her finished plate out, getting distracted by other team members who started a conversation with her. spencer stayed seated where he was, admiring her. he had wondered if what she said about him during the michael stewart case was true, and it is. he felt a feeling of contentment and satisfaction, as if whenever he was around olivia, all his problems went away.
