Chapter 20.
My eyes widened, looking over at my friend. It felt like the world had gone on pause, everyone looking at each other in bewilderment. Wolfgang was the first to move, grabbing me by the arm and easily injecting another piece of the serum straight into my neck. It quickly rushed through my veins, once again making me feel drowsy and clumsy. I staggered back, my eyes moving to the winged man.
His arm was still up, clearly having done something with his own Blessing to determine who exactly Camille was. Why he had been concerned with who she was rather than me trying to escape through the latch on the throne, I had no idea. The only thing I knew was that this man before me had incredible power that was impossible not to be impressed with. He could fly, he clearly could do something with his mind that made him all-knowing. He was the near definition of some sort of higher being.
My eyes followed the king when he took his first step towards Camille. Her head had fallen down to look at the floor. I watched in awe as her hair had returned to its natural state as well as her eyes. The rainbow color of the two catching the people around her in surprise. They knew who she was. Her olive skin tone that matched my own returned to its natural hue of beautiful chocolate with white patches. She now looked like my friend I had grown attached to.
The king stood in front of her now, his steps having moved on shaky legs. He reached his armored hand to her face, analyzing it and reaching for it as if it were a child's. It felt like everyone had stopped breathing, even myself, as the reunion between father and daughter occurred. He enveloped her in a hug, the Exterminator that had been holding her long forgotten. Unfortunately, she was unable to return the embrace, not with the chains she had on her skinny wrists.
I moved slowly, remembering the satchel that hung loosely at my hip. My fingers wrapped around the tiara. My hand just grazed the onyx ring beside it, but I ignored it. Slowly, I pulled out the one thing that I knew would prove to everyone else in the room that Camille was who the blond winged man had said she was. I held it out with a shaking arm, the weakness of my curse impacting my body physically.
Prince Ryder and Princess Dream were the first to notice my movement. They both took a step in my direction but made no move to go to me. The recognition in their eyes was enough information for me to confirm my suspicions. I knew that once the tiara was removed from my hand, my head would be next.
The king released my friend, his eyes snapping to mine. He took a step back as if caught off guard by the sight. Camille noticed his movements and followed his own where they landed on me. It didn't take more than a second for her to notice the tiara in my hands. Her eyebrows scrunched together as the thoughts in her mind gathered.
"You knew," she said, surprise in her eyes.
I couldn't determine if her statement was a question or an accusation so I decided not to answer. My hand moved quickly, and I tossed it to the closest royal I could find, which happened to be the king himself. His reflexes were fast for his age, his eyes looking as if trying to calculate what to do next. While appearing as a good ruler, he held his emotions on his sleeve.
"Take her away," the king ordered, and I felt several hands on my back moving me to the left.
"What?" Camille's said softly, "please no, she is my friend I swear."
"She had the crown that belonged to my daughter, my missing princess," the king sounded pained as he spoke, "she will be dealt with."
"Please, whatever you're going to do let me explain!" It was the first time I had ever heard Camille scream at someone. Though it wasn't an angry scream, it was filled with desperation.
