Chapter 18.
The second our time in the bed was over I hopped off the bed as if Bane had burned me. I tugged on my pants before putting my chest wrapping on and finally my shirt. My boots were easy to zip up and soon, I have fully dressed again. It was as if our time together had never happened, and while I wish it was, I knew I would most likely be the first of many. The thought of being a trophy Bane would be waltzing around in front of our enemy across the river sickened me. A part of me wanted to be so much more than a face plastered beside a very dangerous man.
Bane was resting, but his eyes were open as he watched me, or at least I thought he was. It was difficult to read his face without being able to see where exactly his eyes were gravitating to. We were allies now, tied to the ring that still sat on the card table. Everything that came with it was only temporary, or at least I had expected it. A war that would last a couple of years, and whether we won or lost didn't matter to me. As long as I was alive and the war was over, I would be hopping on that ship so fast I wouldn't be able to say goodbye to Bane.
Time was the only thing against me now. I just hoped it went by quickly.
There was some rustling by the door, and Bane got up to the noise. He grabbed a robe that hung on the side of the bed, wrapping it around tightly. He turned to look at me quickly as if checking to ensure I was decent. I was already moving off the bed and towards the map. I wanted to make sure it was memorized in case I needed to use it against Bane or Wynter. Whoever I would use it against would be determined. I grabbed my satchel off the armchair, latching it tightly to my body.
There was some rustling from where Bane was and a soft thud. A woman's scream could be heard. I knew Bane had opened the secret compartment door, but I was surprised no music could be heard from behind it. Immediately, all of my senses were on high alert. I walked as quickly as I could towards my only exit only to notice a man standing that I didn't recognize.
I looked towards the floor and there was Bane, unconscious.
"Who are you?" I asked, allowing the element of surprise to get the mysterious man who stood still in the doorframe. Judging by his body language it looked like he was ready to pounce at me.
He spoke a language I didn't recognize, one that instantly had me more alert than ever before. Was it a Blessed language? One that Camille didn't speak? The man must've realized I didn't understand him because he spoke again, and this time I understood him loud and clear.
"You are under arrest by His Majesty to be brought in for a trial, come willingly and you will not be harmed."
Exterminator.
"Cobra Gee!" I heard from behind him, and I instantly recognized it as Wynter.
The music had stopped because of the man in front of me. Cursed ran from the sight of Exterminators. If there was one in the area it couldn't be good. Now one stood in front of me, preventing me from leaving. I had to catch him by surprise if I was going to escape. He wouldn't take me alive, that I would do my best to guarantee.
The Curse inside of me began to grow and I made sure a ball of fire would be thrown at him once when I needed it. I took a step back, my eyes once again flickering to Bane. So much for the all-dangerous poison child, Bane. I had expected him to be a little bit more durable than that. If he was going to be king, let's hope there were some other powerful people to back him up. With the way he was right now, I could easily kill him.
The man took a step towards me, and his silhouette was revealed. His hair was brown and long, slicked back with some sort of oil that made him look raggedy. His eyes looked like a crazed animal, teeth poking from his bottom jaw onto his lips. His nose looked more like a snout and his ears resembled a dog. He had hair that looked more like fur all around his arms and bare torso. A set of claws were sharp against where his nails would be. He looked more like an animal than a person.
